FiveThirtyEight: According to qualitative assessments by nonpartisan handicappers Cook Political Report, Sabatos Crystal Ball and Inside Elections, only eight GOP-held governorships are completely safe in 2018. That leaves 18 Republican-held governorships in some degree of danger.

(12,344 posts)1. The headline is misleading
Here in Maryland, Gov. Hogan is pretty popular abd will be tough to beat. He is governing as an anti-Trump moderate, and it seems to be working. He even took down a statue of Roger Taney, author of the Dred Scott decision. Smart move.

But hey we need to find a way to label republicans running against Trump as opportunists.

I've been liking this emphasis on state houses and races. One of the big reasons Trump has been able to be so damaging and could continue to be damaging is the number of state houses that the GOP also controls. We need to break out of this intense and narrow focus on the Presidency as the be all and end all of our goals and the damage that can be done if we don't win it.
