On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, a tragic shooting took place, killing 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. FIDL, a prominent French high school union, wishes to share its thoughts and support to the families and friends of the victims.

Since the tragedy happened, you have, students and high school students, taken to the streets to oppose the ease with which, in the United States, individuals can acquire automatic weapons and spread death

FIDL stands in solidarity with your movement.

Schools should be, for us as for you, a sanctuary, that every young person can safely attend. When we go to school, we expect to receive knowledge, rather than bullets.

It is unfortunately clear that Donald Trump, backed by the NRA, which generously subsidized his populist campaign, is not going to settle the issue of gun control in the United States.

But your movement contributes towards progress, and we are convinced that the mobilization of youth can change societies. The French youth will support the NEVER AGAIN movement, starting with us.

Your movement brings hope and embodies justice. We too believe in the right to go to school without being shot and in the right to live in a world in which human beings do not kill each other. We too believe in the duty to silence the arms lobby which profits from crime, and the duty to build a world where weapons can no longer serve as methods of intimidation.

After many shootings in high schools and universities, it is high time that the indecent sellers of death stop boasting about the Constitution of the United States. The United States Constitution was written to preserve freedom and equality, not to preserve the freedom to kill young or old.

Thanks to you for making more noise than Donald Trump and his NRA friends, who wish the United States remained a country where buying a gun may be easier than a bottle of alcohol or a cigarette pack.

School helps to replace blood and violence with words and creation. Let not blood and violence prevent this mission from being fulfilled.

These few words are barely sufficient but we hope that they will reach you. We want to tell you that we admire you and believe that you have the power to change things.

On March 24th, in France and elsewhere, the youth will watch you with emotion.

In front of every Donald Trump, there are thousands and thousands of Emma Gonzalez, thousands and thousands of young people ready to take their responsibilities seriously, and who will no longer accept the cynicism of irresponsible rulers.
