(3,435 posts)...if he is invited by graduating class, then yes. His message has always been aspirational.

(2,574 posts).I'd truly be shocked if the NRA didn't contribute a boatload to Bush's reelection that year....

(31,112 posts)decent person who was a horrible president. I am not saying he is, necessarily, just predicting history.
Especially now in light of the pile of human filth infecting our WH.

(4,178 posts)I also suggested Joe because
I really believe Joe is gearing up for a run and this would be great publicity .

(43,182 posts)Even Trump knows that attempting to go there would be a disaster for him. That's why he (and Rick Scott) stiffed the Town Hall meeting.
President Obama's speech at the Sandy Hook memorial was perhaps my favorite of his presidency. I'm not saying that if he speaks at the graduation he needs to give a memorial speech that dwells on what happened, but I think someone of high esteem should come and recognize and reward these kids for the type of leadership they themselves have taken.
President Obama would be great, as well as Vice President Biden.

(10,053 posts)Everyone one should hear that speech.
It was so relevant that it could have been today and not 1990.
Especially when she said at the end that it was not up to the elders anymore, that they were now the elders and that they could make change that was needed.

(1,663 posts)I'd like to also offer Sen. Diane Feinstein as a choice. Much like the school's namesake, she's a trailblazer in her own right and has more "guts" than many of her male colleagues.

(23,248 posts)Gabrielle Giffords.

(54,405 posts)It wouldn't be an ideal choice, although just having her and Mark attend would be gesture enough.
I have known her since before she was shot, and you can't imagine the mind cooped up in that convoluted speech center just exploding with ideas she wants to get out.

(54,405 posts)She might well have been a serious contender for president in 2020 or 2024.
I think can't imagine the curses Mark must say about Loughner every morning and night. I know she's still "in there." When I saw her after she was shot (it was December 2012) I was worried she might not recognize me after nearly 2 years (we had been together for New Year's 2010-2011). I needn't have concerned myself. As soon as she saw me, she reached out for me with her good arm and let out a squeal of delight. She has lost motor skills, granted, but is the same bright, aware woman she always was, locked up in there.

"Rizzo described Aaron Feis, his football coach for two seasons at Stoneman Douglas High School, as a hero for shielding his body in front of students before getting killed. Rizzo spoke to Feis last month after Rizzo donated $150,000 to help pay for lights for the schools baseball field."

(58,349 posts)Actually, I think Malala would be awesome - bring in a Muslim woman who's been shot and was also a teenage activist? Hell yeah!
That'd really be not only just totally awesome to have her speak there because she's so awesome... it would be a total poke in the face of all the rightwing Christian jihadists in this country that are making us so unsafe and are no different than the people who shot her.
