Yeah, that's the ticket...That'll fix this for sure.

(146,317 posts)For real. He's the one I mentioned in another post who actively bullied non-athletes on a regular basis, including me. He stopped that when I told him he had done it for the last time and reported what he had done to my father. My father marched down to the school the next day and visited the principal's office. The coach was called in for a conference, where my father, who flew B-17s during the war, read the coach the riot act. Nothing like that ever happened again.
What did that coach do? Well, I wasn't paying close enough attention during a session where the basics of boxing were being taught. So, coach called me up, put the gloves on me, and then delivered a right hook to my jaw that knocked me unconscious for a few seconds. That's when I told the coach that was the last time he would ever call me out for abuse, and walked out of the gym.
He would have been the first to volunteer to carry a gun at school. He, and those like him, should never be allowed to be armed.

(28,394 posts)You had a lot of courage! No one ever talked back to or challenged teachers back in the day. And congrats to your dad! I don't think my dad even knew what grade I was in.

(146,317 posts)Not often, and usually when they behaved badly toward some other student than myself. My father, who is 93 years old now, had an extremely strong sense of fairness about things. He was someone who stood up for anyone who was being taken of advantage of whenever he encountered such a thing. He taught me that. He taught me to stand up for myself and for others. He taught me to avoid fighting with people, but to stand my ground when attacked.
So, my response to that final act of bullying by that coach wasn't really courage. It was what I was taught to do. I walked out on that gym class, but not before telling the coach what I thought of his action. I had no power, so I passed what had happened along to my father, who did. The result was that the coach never did anything like that again to anyone. He stopped bullying non-athletic kids altogether. The difference in his behavior was like night and day, at least when I was present.
I don't know what my father said to him in that office with the principal there, but I can imagine that it was very, very uncomfortable for that coach. Things changed. Sometimes, things need to change. Sometimes a person can make things change.
That's what I learned from my father.

(3,445 posts)It can be part of their job description: "once you leave active duty, you will be transfered to PS102 to serve as an English teacher."
Who the frack thinks that ANY school system is going to be able to carry insurance? No insurance company in the world is going to want that kind of liability.
My mother taught school for over 32 years. I'm so grateful she's no longer around to see this. She was terrified of guns and would have never believe anyone could suggest such a thing.
