They are teachers. A few teachers, however, might eagerly seek the opportunity to bear arms in the classroom. I maintain that that second group should NEVER be armed. If they want to be armed in such a situation, their motives are, I believe, suspect.
If we look back at the teachers we all had in our school days, I think what I'm saying would be clear. I know that I can remember a few teachers who would have relished being armed, but whose temperaments were such that they should not have been armed. I remember a sadistic coach and PE teacher who actively bullied non-athletes. I remember a teacher of History who scowled at all times an clearly resented the need to instruct students. I remember an English teacher whose contempt for the 30% of the students in my school who were Hispanic was clear and obvious.
I would not arm any of those people, but they would have been the first to volunteer.
It's just a bad idea, altogether.

(28,394 posts)I worked in a rural district that actually closes on the first day of deer season. There were a lot of (mostly) men teachers who loved acting like tough guys during our annual self-defense and lockdown trainings. Our union actually had a gun auction way back in the day when I was first hired there! I was horrified.
Schools need to be kept gun-free zones. Let these "tough guys" and gun-nuts get their jollies in the woods or on a range. No need to endanger students even more by having teachers with delusions of being a big hero in their midst. It's foolish and foolhardy.

This is a debate with stupid people, one of the most difficult kind.

(32,006 posts)I had a teacher who was an alcoholic who kept a bottle of booze locked in his desk drawer! Gee what could go wrong giving a guy like that a gun???
My husband (a retired inner city school teacher) and I were discussing this very thing a few minutes ago, MM. The few teachers who would relish carrying a weapon are the exact ones who shouldn't have one.

(146,317 posts)What is frightening is how many people there are out there who apparently lack the ability to reason. We have one such person living in the White House. We had better get our GOTV act together quickly. If we don't, this may well become the established norm.
