Individual fixed term licensing of all semi-automatic weapons. If you have ten, you need ten licenses. The licenses must be renewed (say) every three years. License fees help cover background checks and firearm victims medical costs
Deny/revoke licenses when there are "red flags," such as domestic abuse or history of making threats. Individual rights can be protected by allowing judicial review of denials/revocations
Eliminate the prohibition on federal registry of firearms
Eliminate the "must-issue" period for background checks. Fully fund a federal background check system, to include contact with local authorities for "red flags." If careful background checks are too slow, Congress can increase funding
Eliminate the prohibition on federal research into firearms injury and death. Fund such research. This will produce data that can be used to tailor social responses more effectively
Eliminate "liability shields" for firearms manufacturers and dealers. Let manufacturers and dealers protect themselves against liability suits by purchasing insurance on the open market
Ban large capacity magazines
Eliminate the "gun show loophole" for background checks

(4,516 posts)says all gun owners have to submit to mental health screening annually. Of course that would require a national gun registration too.

(37,573 posts)When they asked me that when I came out of surgery I was damned if I was gonna say George W. Bush.
So I said "I think it's Al Gore" - this was in March of 2005.

(62,444 posts)It keeps saying Im paranoid. But there really are a lot of people out to get me.

(37,573 posts)is that the mental health profession is about as scientific as the economics profession, but that they would be more than happy to have millions of people forced to pay for screenings and a percentage of those test takers forced into various treatments.

(26,044 posts)...because that's what it will take to get most of those items, as desirable as they might be, from being thrown out by SCOTUS as (currently) unconstitutional.

(445 posts)All semi-automatic long guns will require the same background investigation as a hand gun.
