I Have A Question. What About Other Public Places Besides Schools. Remember Las Vegas.

60 died their with hundreds wounded with many serious and now disabled. We cannot put guards everywhere.

So we will protect schools with armed teachers. Every where else we will arm the general public by having open carry laws with any weapon you want anywhere you want to carry it.

Otherwise the general public is SOOL.

You can't protect everything. There will always be another place to attack instead which is just as deadly - a mall or a movie theatre or
basketball game or a flea market.

My question is that as an old guy I grew up in a time of race riots, and huge street protests. Guns were much more available then than they are today, including semi-automatics without any background checks at all. In many places kids would carry guns on the streets and no one said anything. There was less healthcare, much less mental healthcare, and yet there weren't any people coming into schools and randomly trying to kill as many people as they could. Oh we had shootings. You'd have a teacher kill themselves. You'd have a boyfriend shoot the new boyfriend. You had lots of accidental shootings as kids had their guns right in their trucks.

So the question is why is it different today? Why is this happening today when it didn't happen before?

My own opinion is that so many boys are on behavior modifying drugs today.

Except that it distracts from the easy solution that doesn't really solve the "root cause" (at risk of parody).

What's missing in the discussion of mass shootings being much more common is that overall, even including mass shootings, gun violence is way down. It's not nearly as common as it was before--and, in fact, there are more guns "out there" now than before. They're just distributed differently.

Yes, "assault weapons" are more common. But they're just mean looking semi-automatics. My brother's Glock could hold as many rounds in a magazine and since it's easy to swap out magazines, could do the same kind of damage. But it doesn't look as mean and scary, whatever the facts may be.

After organizing a giant tribute/memorial, his childhood best friend killed herself. With the exact same gun her oldest brother used to kill himself ten years ago. I couldn’t bring myself to go to her funeral, even though I knew her better.

I’m a one issue voter now.

Thoughts of the Sandy Hook kids haunt me the most. Thoughts of the terror that those poor babies felt... I also can't imagine how the lives changed for the survivors, parents, siblings, extended family, first responders, school staff, community, etc.

I'm so sorry about your friend.

should be addressed. Yes,those Family Members,Police,Fire and EMT's pick up the pieces. Have known families that have been affected by a violent death of a family member. It change everyone associated with the victim in a very unhealthy way. Suicide is another issue that leaves families in disarray and only intervention saves the day.

Government offices take all kinds of anti-gun safety measures, so it wouldn't be an easy task for gun-toting lunatics, but I doubt they'll support meaningful gun control unless they're personally terrified.
