Yes, there are countries in which the approval of a national security service is required to run. Russia is one of them. Other notable countries with this approach include Venezuela.

This is an unworkable idea requiring the consent of the government in power for an opposition candidate to run.

Please name the person you want to decide who can run, and tell me how that person gets their job.

Candidate X is the son of a foreign politician who left the US after X was born. His mother then took him to another country where he was raised as the stepchild of a Muslim man whose family was killed in a war against a European ally. He returns to the US and visits Pakistan in 1981 before launching his political career.

Candidate X decides to run for president, and Dick Cheney manipulates intelligence reports.

In what possible universe does Candidate X get “cleared to run”?
