Having seen firsthand the events in the 60s and now these great high school kids today, I am struck by the similarities.
I wish them the same success. But faster.

(115,735 posts)But I hope they realize that, even though things seem to be moving faster than in those days - thanks in part to social media - these movements always take time and there will be setbacks. They might get discouraged. They're up against the vast resources of the NRA and the intransigence of their bought and paid for politicians. It will be a tough battle. The Civil Rights movement started in the early '60s, and resulted in the 1964 Civil Rights Act and many other improvements but that battle hasn't been won yet. The women's movement of the '70s has become #metoo, but that fight continues as well. The antiwar movement eventually helped end the Vietnam war and the draft, but it didn't prevent subsequent stupid wars. The fight is never over, and this one will go on for a long time. I hope these kids know that and keep fighting anyway.

(6,709 posts)I have always seen the 60s as a time when black people, women, students, environmentalists were all feeling their power and making strides.
It scared the crap out of conservatives, who started a long, focused effort to stop our forward progress and even roll it back. EEG Democrats have been painfully slow and--unfortunately--ineffective in our response. We can see the results.
But now the pendulum has reached--I think--it's furthest rightward point, and with the help of these same groups (plus more, like LGBTQ) will start coming back.
I hope.

(118,295 posts)There's another armed crazy on the skids
He's got his mind in a terrible frame
Looking for someone to blame
So put down your books and duck from a gun
Going to have a whole lot of fun
CHORUS
And it's 1, 2, 3
What are we dying for?
Don't ask me: it's a mystery
Next stop is surgery
And it's 5, 6, 7
Open up the pearly gates
There ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee!
We're all going to die
Well, come on, congress, let's move fast
Your big chance has come at last
Got to go and collect your pay
The only good lobbyist is the NRA
And you know that silence can only come
When we've all been blown to kingdom come
CHORUS
Well, come on, Wall Street, don't move slow!
Cash in on slaughterhouse-a-go-go!
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the loonies with the tools of the trade
Just hope and pray when the loonies
They forget to shoot someone
CHORUS

We have failed to make their careers depend on implementing the reform we need.
