(34,136 posts)Because of a valve replacement.
The therapists were joking about places to go to eat for lunch. One of the clients said he was headed to Whataburger and the PTs were all, "After all this work we've done to help you get stronger?"

(3,911 posts)People asked if I was going to change my diet. I was like "are you kidding? I've got all new plumbing? I can eat anything!"

(34,136 posts)My aortic valve just wasn't opening anymore. It was probably a congenital defect that didn't show up until I was old enough - my Mom has the same problem but hers didn't show up until she was 86 and she turned down open heart surgery.
I was lucky to get a non-invasive valve replacement, but it took finding a cancerous kidney to get qualified. But then, without the tests for the valve replacement, they wouldn't have found the kidney cancer until it spread. Win - win in a bizarre way.
The really good news was that my arteries seem to be pretty clear of plaque!

(3,911 posts)My case wasn't emergent. I had an MI 11 years earlier (at age 37! Yikes!) and got three stents put in. That was life changing. But at this point, I've been a cardiac patient for over a decade, and have seen my Cardiologist regularly the entire time.
I was feeling wrong (really the only way to describe it), and asked him for a referral to cardiac rehab (which I had done the first time around) because I wanted to get into better shape without worry. He suggested going to the cath lab first to see what's what. So we did that, all three stents are perfect, but hey, you have five other blockages. Here's the name of a good surgeon. Off to that consult, yep, you should do surgery, schedule something in the next month or two.
So the whole thing was on my terms, on my timetable, and I'd already made all sorts of life choices the decade earlier. That, plus a whole truckload of Xanax, and the whole thing was remarkably chill. And after I healed, I got to go to rehab!
Or more to the point, "Sure, you can go to rehab, but first, we're going to take you out back and beat the living hell out of you."

(34,136 posts)I really started noticing a problem after I got my knees replaced in 2012. While I could walk without pain, I kept running out of breath or so it seemed. They sent me to an allergist thinking it was allergies and asthma. I kept trying to use the meds they gave me and work around the "breathing" problem.
It wasn't until Nov. 2016 that they heard the heart murmur. Then it wasn't until July 2017 that I could get all the tests needed to diagnose it properly. During one test I was recruited for a clinical trial for Trans Arterial Valve Replacement. The last test to get me into the trial was the one that found the kidney cancer. After that, it was emergency mode to get the valve replaced quickly so they could take the kidney out ASAP.
The cardio rehab guys called me between operations and I told them to just hold off until after I was cleared from the second operation.
It's tough to go through all this crap, isn't it? I'm tired of operations but not done with them. I just found out today I get to have a tooth surgically extracted. While they are at it, they will implant a post to hold a new fake tooth. Goody, something else to look forward to!

(3,911 posts)I totally hear ya. I'm glad you are working your way through rehab. It really makes a huge difference in long term recovery.
The dental thing truly sucks, though. You have my sympathies.

(34,136 posts)Left rotator cuff totally rebuilt - 6 months of PT
Both knees meniscus removed (not at the same time) - 3 months each time
Right shoulder cleaned up - 3 months PT
Knees replaced (not at the same time) - 9 days in rehab hospital, three months PT
Carpal tunnel on both arms (not at the same time) - 3 months PT each
Now in cardio rehab and looking forward to more work on my hands once I am off the Plavix. I'm hoping injections will do the hands this time but they are hurting a lot.
This poor tooth has been warning for years - two root canals, three cavities in the last two years. It's just gone beyond what we can patch up anymore. The dentist was trying to work up to why he had to recommend taking it out when I broached the idea - he was very relieved. The first root canal was on the same day I first saw this dentist. My old one had retired but I didn't like the guy he passed his clients to. I lucked into this one and am very pleased with his work, so that is good.

(17,984 posts)There was a cookie bakery that delivered all night. Mmmmmm, fresh, warm M&M cookies at 3am....mmmmmmmm. And that is ALL the baked, just cookies, lots and lots of cookies.
After they closed, my friend and I tried to bake cookies at 3am. Something went wrong every time. Maybe it was the fact we couldn't stop laughing that we left some key ingredient out. I don't know. Our cookies were never as good as the real bakery's.

(1,474 posts)about a Krispy Cream Doughnut Cheeseburger. Sounded gross. I have not smoked pot in years, but if I was fried, the cheeseburger might sound good. I probably will smoke again, but I am diabetic. Kind of poetic justice. Munchies seem to lead to high blood sugar.
