OPRF students stage walkout as part of effort to end gun violence: 'Weve got to be that change'
OPRF High School students walk out of classes February 21 to demand stronger gun laws.
Hundreds of Oak Park and River Forest High School students walked out of their classrooms this afternoon to demand that Congress enact stronger gun regulations. The walkout comes one week after a shooter killed 17 students at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. At noon, the students poured out of the main entrance of the high school, and held a rally at the intersection of Scoville Avenue and Ontario Street. The gun laws in this country are broken, OPRF senior Connor Hartweg said. We really need to update todays laws. Our government isnt doing that. If we cant lean on them to do it, then weve got to be that change.
Several demonstrations have been scheduled on different dates throughout the nation. Students were scheduled to meet with lawmakers and take part in a rally today at Florida's Capitol, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
At OPRF, students rallied in front of the school, then walked east on Ontario Street, south on Ridgeland Avenue and west on Lake Street. -
