The protests continue and the adults are losing control

High schools all over South Florida are spilling into the streets and the adults are losing control.

This article made me cry with pride. Our kids get it.

My daughter's school is one of the ones mentioned in this article.

Last night we received a robocall telling us that today's walk-out was not sanctioned and that we needed to talk to our more kids about staying in class. I promptly talked to my child and told her it was entirely her choice and she should do what she thought was right.

I just got another robocall a few minutes ago saying they failed miserably and that 1500 kids left campus.

Sadly, I don't think my daughter was among them. She has some very serious academic and extra-curricular commitments that she was afraid she couldn't miss. She was broken up about it but she told me last night that she thought that she would have to stay behind. I promised her we would participate in the 3/24 protest just to make sure she didn't take it so hard. It frustrates me that she had to choose between being a good student and being a good citizen but I am just proud that she wants to be both.

I don't blame the school or the school system. They are trying to keep them safe and despite all the tragedies, the campus is still the most controlled environment for that. They simply don't have the means to properly protect that many kids on the open roads. They had to be against it. Frankly if they were for it, the kids might have decided to do something else because they want to own this. Secretly, I think the school administration were all for it and had to put up the public face of keeping the kids in school.

As a student I would refuse to stay. Take the day off, stay home, go to a planned event. I have one at my District Ed Center and will be there during the Walkout with other educators, students, parents, community members and local govt officials. The number of events has tripled since announced by the Women's March organizers last Fri. Here is info I put together and have posted on DU. Spread the word. RESIST! #ENOUGH

#ENOUGH National School Walkout: Wed. March 14
The Women's March is organizing a National School Walkout on Wednesday, March 14. At 10am in each time zone, students, administrators, teachers, parents, and community members are encouraged to walk out of schools for 17 minutes, in honor of the 17 victims of last week's shooting in Parkland, FL.

#NationalSchoolWalkout
Students across the nation are organizing to hold another walkout on April 20, the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School. Launched by a Connecticut high school student, the student-run event encourages students to wear orange, participate in the walkout, and organize events in their community.

and be by her side on 3/24. Teenaging is hard.

In the meantime, perhaps you can suggest working on a sign(s) and/or designing a shirt for the march. Creative outlets can be very therapeutic.
