Mikel Jollett @Mikel_Jollett 24h24 hours agoRight now in America there are Republicans who received millions of dollars from the NRA accusing CHILDREN who survived a massacre of being PAID to speak out on guns.

(15,124 posts)That word has lost its meaning. These guys aren't conservative at all.
My late father was Conservative, and he would be disgusted by what has happened to his Republican party. He was a WWII Navy vet and a truly good man. At one point he had a signed photo of GWB on his desk. It disappeared one day and I never asked why. But I was glad to see it go.
RIP Dad. He's been gone 10 years.

(62,423 posts)these people aren't conservative, they are revolutionaries trying to install a right wing government.
When the media uses the term "conservative" for these people they muddy political discourse.

(15,124 posts)when I hear Paul Ryan in his smarmy little "pretending to be wonky" voice, talk about "conservative principles".
He has no principles.

(47,501 posts)and very active in politics until Watergate. He would be appalled at what his party has become. By today's standards, republicans would probably call my father a liberal Democrat.

(15,124 posts)When I think about my Dad's values - integrity, honesty, kindness, helping the less fortunate - it astounds me that he was a Republican. But that party has really gone off the rails. And all we had to do was elect a brilliant, capable, thoughtful, kind black man into the Oval Office.

(1,896 posts)They just believed the government wasn't the best way to accomplish them. They thought local charities were a more efficient way of helping the poor, or that making life easier for business would lead to more jobs, and so on. They had a set of principles and a serious argument about why they were right. You could disagree with them, but truly hating them was hard as long as they really did want to make the country a better place.
To paraphrase something I heard somebody say once, those guys didn't leave the Republican Party. The Republican Party left them.
My father believed in honesty in government and was opposed to World War II. I can't say I agree with everything he believed, but he was sincere and decent. He was gravely disappointed in Richard Nixon. Though he continued to vote in every election, he never canvassed for any candidate again. For a long time, he was a precinct captain in our small town, but I think he felt betrayed by his party after William Stratton and Richard Nixon.

(3,985 posts)Again, if we had our own ALEC we could write a simple law and send it to every DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER in the country to pass
Passing a semi-automatic weapon baby ban should be a no-brainer
Imagine the press, who would be forced to report by Citizen Information Warriors, if a State Legislator refused to bring up for a vote and pass?
Again, a Baby Step Legislation.
