Spielberg said in a statement that he and his wife, Kate Capshaw, would join George and Amal Clooney in making a $500,000 donation to the cause.
The young students in Florida and now across the country are already demonstrating their leadership with a confidence and maturity that belies their ages, Spielberg said, according to Deadline. Kate and I applaud their efforts to take a stand for the benefit of this and future generations. They are an inspiration to us all.
Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg also pledged a $500,000 donation, Deadline reported.

Between the high profile celebrity donations and the countless donations from ordinary non-celebrities, it feels like something big may finally be happening in this fight.

(40,416 posts)Those high school students in FL aren't going to stand for their shit any longer.
Form a line at the left... and it looks like that is exactly what is happening.
Maybe this will be the beginning of a downturn for the NRA - like what was able to happen with the cigarette lobby.

(31 posts)I sense the rest of the world have given up on America. Especially after no action was taken after Sandy Hook. You'd think after all those kids were slaughtered something would happen, but no. Hope I'm wrong though.

(2,648 posts)nothing will happen. The NRA tells them what they can and cannot do about the 2nd Amendment.
Vote them out!

(981 posts)something like "Kid killers" and put the names of all the politicians that voted against the assault rifle ban in full page adds and on TV adds. Make it so politically toxic for the bastards to take NRA money they get voted out.

(12,586 posts)otherwise it will just be squandered with nothing to show. If the students are going to be dealing with large amounts of money, they're going to have to reach out to those who have experience managing such funds. I imagine some of the large donors would be happy to put them in touch with such people, just to be sure their money is used responsibly.
I want this movement to not last just the present moment, but on and on until the NRA/GOP is castrated. This $2 million fund is a great starting point -- and that's before the small donors start kicking in.

(31,464 posts)Get the guns off the streets. People will still march.
Marches do jack shit. Just look at how many people marched in protest of the invasion of Iraq. No one paid any attention to a few million old hippies and kids.
I appreciate what Spielberg and Katz are trying to do, but that is THEATER. Sure, it's their expertise, but it is an empty, hollow demonstration. Do something REAL. You could get millions of kids to march without Spielberg and Katz. Use that money to get guns off the street.
