Richard Martinez, a California man whose son was slain in a mass shooting in Santa Barbara in 2014, appeared on CNN Monday to tear apart the National Rifle Association’s arguments about the solution to gun violence in the United States.

“It is absolutely outrageous — the gun lobby will tell us that the solution to gun violence is more guns,” he said. “It’s ridiculous. we are Americans in the 21st Century… we can do better than that. More guns is not the answer to gun violence.”

That said, Martinez said he was optimistic about activism occurring at a statewide level that could force politicians to enact stronger measures aimed at restricting gun violence.
“I have been working in states across the country — the momentum is with gun safety,” he said.
