NRA is busy making calls today

My husband became a lifetime member decades ago, and got a call from the NRA just now, and we both picked up from different rooms. They warned him that "our enemies" are coming after our second amendment rights and the "fake news media" is spreading lies about "us". Repeat that a few different ways, be afraid, very afraid, and then ask for money. We can bump your membership up for $200, etc. "Let's get you signed up".

Silence. My husband had hung up during the first sentence. I listened to the whole hateful, fear-mongering thing. Then I let him know the NRA member had left the call, I wasn't a member, and I asked if the children in Florida who are asking for any small action on gun control are the enemies. Also said something about fundraising on what happened there - not sure what I said exactly - I was so mad by that time. But there was just silence. I think he hung up. I hope they hear a lot of the same today. Maybe they should be afraid.

Guns are explicit phallic icons of the male patriarchy... that's the real reason so many men who own guns --but not all men who own guns-- feel so threatened by the thought of someone taking their guns, which is representative of taking their masculinity. And further, the image of Hillary Clinton --A WOMAN-- taking their guns (penises) was almost incendiary in the public sphere.

Next time you get a call from the NRA, or anyone here at DU , tell the caller..."So sorry, I no longer contribute my hard earned money to TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS that puts gun rights over the lives and rights of innocent children." See how many hang up on you.

That is until I realized 1) DU most likely isn't picking those ads, they just come from an ad network service that DU is using, and (especially this) 2) those ads are more than likely going to waste, as it's unlikely to generate many clicks from DU visitors. Meanwhile, DU gets paid for ad impressions.

Unless I'm mistaken on how that whole ad business works.

And that means all the businesses, restaurants, and other commercial entities that would NOT get one's business. Might actually be furthering future boycotts.

I would vote Mueller for President if he could bust up NRA and Fox via conspiracy with Russia indictments and convictions.

IN 2012, as a Christmas present to me, he tore up his membership card. (I grew up 40 minutes from Newtown). They call him quite frequently asking him to renew and he always tells them that they have the blood of first graders on their hands.

This time it genuinely feels like we will get something done. At the very least, it will show the voters which members of congress are owned by the NRA - and that will be reflected in some flipped seats in November.

It may have served a purpose at one time, but now it's about money and power. And unfortunately the rest of us have had enough with the political agenda they support that is killing our children, killing everyone indiscriminately.

after every mass shooting they would scare people into buying more assault weapons by claiming Obama will ban them. That doesn't work these days when GOP control everything and gun nuts already have enough weapons.

I read somewhere that they've been losing members for some time. I hope to see the day when they dissolve into obscure irrelevance and kids only hear about them in history class.

23. NRA phone call I got in Aug, 2016...
Mon Feb 19, 2018, 03:40 PM
Feb 2018

I have shared this before on DU but feel it's worth sharing again. Their whole reason for being is to raise money. They will use anything they can to manipulate and scare people into donating. Anyway, the following is what I shared before...

So I get this phone call from the NRA...

A guy representing the NRA asks to speak to me by name. He said, “This is the National Rifle Association with a recording from Wayne LaPierre followed by a one question survey, would I listen. I said, sure, go ahead. So I listened to the recorded spiel about how Obama wants to take our gun rights away on his way out of office. That Hillary wants to get in behind him and further take away our gun rights. The liberals don’t want us to keep our gun rights. The NRA has no free air time on TV. yadda, yadda, yadda. When the recording was over the man calling got back on the phone and in his deep, loud, confident voice asked something to the effect of whether I want to keep my gun rights. I said of course I do. So he goes into the real purpose of the call and that was to separate me from my money. He said a normal 5 year membership is $200.00 but today I could get it for a special charge of $125.00 or $150.00, I don’t remember but at a reduced rate. So I said I would like to ask him a question. Silence on his end. So I proceeded to ask him, “What is Obama doing to take away our gun rights?” The man’s voice on the phone completely changed from a deep, strong, confident voice to literally muffled, stuttering, and mumbling. He sounded like Milton from the movie “Office Space". I waited and he finally said in his less than previously strong voice that he’s sorry but he’s not allowed to give his opinion. I told him, I don’t want your opinion, I want facts. He mumbled, “I’m sorry, I’m not at liberty to say." I said I want to know what is Obama doing to take our gun rights away? He mumbled some more and apologized and said again that he’s not at liberty to say. I spoke again telling him that the NRA is saying they don’t have free air time on TV but I said I am giving him free time right now to tell me. Another “I’m sorry, I’m not at liberty to say.” I said you called me to ask me to join yet you cannot answer any questions? I said, this is creepy. Then I said, have a good day, goodbye.
What I should also have said was, so the NRA is trying to protect the 2nd Amendment while taking away your 1st Amendment right to free speech by telling you, you are not allowed to voice your opinion? And then I should have said, I don’t want your opinion, I want the facts.

In the late 1990's he saw the dark & dangerous turn the formerly rational, gun safety-oriented organization was taking & canceled his membership. He returned his lifetime membership card in a postage-paid envelope the NRA had helpfully supplied to him in one of their frequent mailings. Duct-taped to a brick. Damn, I miss my dad.

I'd invite him to join me in leaving the NRA for good. I've been a member for over 40 years, and a Life Member (actually Endowment) for almost half of that, but tomorrow I'm mailing a letter resigning my membership. Enough is enough.

about 1996 or 97. My aunt allowed his campaign to use her office to make calls. The first call I heard was a guy saying he was "from the NRA and could Dave Jaye count on his support?" I was shocked. My aunt was a die-hard Republican. She was even a little perturbed when I told her, although I don't think she quite believed me. Later, when Jaye was ousted from the State Senate for public drunkenness and drunk driving, my aunt finally admitted that the guy was a scumbag.
