Did George Washington Predict Donald Trump?

In September 1796, George Washington, weary of partisan combat just eight years after the ratification of the Constitution and the founding of the nation, wrote a farewell address explaining why he would not seek a third term. His message is worth remembering in our current political moment.

In elaborate and thoughtful prose, Washington raised red flags about disunity, false patriotism, special interests, extreme partisanship, fake news, the national debt, foreign alliances and foreign hatreds. With uncanny foresight, he warned that the most serious threat to our democracy might come from disunity within the country rather than interference from outside. And he foresaw the possibility of foreign influence over our political system and the rise of a president whose ego and avarice would transcend the national interest, raising the threat of despotism.

It looks interesting, I'll watch the entire video tomorrow.

The book interests me too. I'll see if I can find a good translation. If not, I'll read it in English.

I'm curious to discover their point of view. I have mine about democracies or what will call democracies. It is a very interesting subject.

Democracy is, somehow, a generic word. What ancient Greek called democracy and how we define it now is very very different.

By now days standards, you can hardly consider the system in use in Ancient Greece as a democracy

Or to the contrary, countries we do not consider as democracies, if you take a closer look at, applies many democratic principles.

I know I will make many climb the walls, but Iran for example, has not such bad system. I'm not saying it is perfect or that it will meet my views, but it is not the dictatorial theocracy depicted, well...very conveniently For example, they have legal representation of minorities, women are not as free as we are, but have the same chances as men in terms of education and jobs. There is a high number of women leading important fields.

A point we often forget, is that political and judicial systems, mainly reflect the citizens will.

As authoritarian as could be a government, it only constitutes a very small part of an entire population. If the masses move against the leaders, these have absolutely no chance to win.

I know I'm oversimplifying, I hope I have expressed the main idea.
