As the president tweeted on Saturday: Funny how the Fake News Media doesnt want to say that the Russian group was formed in 2014, long before my run for President. Maybe they knew I was going to run even though I didnt know!
This claim is absurd on its face. That Donald Trump floated the idea of running for the White House several times before he officially threw his hat in the ring on June 16, 2015, is a matter of public record. Moreover, he applied for a patent on his trademark slogan Make America Great Again back in November 2012, just six days after Barack Obama was reelected. Donald Trumps Twitter feed between then and the official announcement of his candidacy included several references to his impending presidential run. The future candidate was re-tweeting others use of the #Trump2016 hashtag as far back as 2013, another indication that the White House was on Trumps mind long before June 2015.
Then theres highly classified intelligence demonstrating that Donald Trump was planning on running for the presidencywith Kremlin backingyears before the 2016 election. Back in the spring of 2014, a European intelligence service, a NATO ally of the United States, received a top-secret report that the Russians would back Donald Trump for the White House in the next election. The source was a mid-level Russian intelligence official who had plausible access to secret Kremlin plans.
Moreover, this source had a track record of providing accurate information, so his Trump bombshell merited examination. However, our partners determined that the notion was so absurdafter all, Trump was a reality TV star, a mere carnival barker, not a serious personthat the report had to be Russian disinformation. The source was put on ice for several months and his information was not shared with the Americans, since our friends didnt want to appear so foolish as to suggest Donald Trump would run for president with secret Russian help.

Based on SIGINT reflections back in November 2013, it appeared likely that Trump had discussions with Kremlin officials when he was visiting Moscow, in preparation for his coming run for the White House. Its one hell of a coincidence, an NSA official told me, that high-ranking Russians suddenly start talking about getting Trump in the White House right after hes in Moscow. Its unclear what intelligence, if any, was shared with the Obama White House about these SIGINT reflections, since its conclusions were tentative; there was no top-secret smoking gun. We can hope that Bob Mueller and his prosecutors will now get to the bottom of this murky intelligence puzzle.

(14,901 posts)SigInt isn't something joe blow would have access to. Either this is a made up leak, or someone leaked this for a very specific reason.
This isn't a normal leak.
Maybe even a foreign source?
Sorry, with all the trolls and bots trolling sites, I have become very suspicious of unamed sources. EVEN when it fits my view of how things work.

To know, you have to see the intel or get briefed by someone who has, and nobody who has is going to leak that without some really, really, good cover.
He didn't see it himself. He doesn't have the current clearance. So how does he know this?

(34,117 posts)The article includes the laughably false assertion that trump applied for a patent on his trademark. If you can't be bothered to fact check whether it is even possible to patent a trademark, I have no faith that you have fact checked things you can't easily clarify by looking up a definition or two.

Yes he filled an application to register his trademark. He did not file to PATENT his trademark, because that isn't something it is possible to do, which might have taken all of a minute to confirm. If the author can't even bother to do that basic level of fact checking, I can't trust that they have been more careful with other facts that would take a bit more digging to confirm

The four words that would help propel Donald Trump to the White House were an inspiration born years before, when hardly anyone but Trump himself could imagine him taking the oath of office as the 45th president of the United States.
It happened on Nov. 7, 2012, the day after Mitt Romney lost what had been presumed to be a winnable race against President Obama. Republicans were spiraling into an identity crisis, one that had some wondering whether a GOP president would ever sit in the Oval Office again.
