the salesman of our fears. Herman Melville's short story still has lessons for us. His tale of a traveling lightning rod salesman who called upon potential customers at the height of thunderstorms to stoke their fears and make a sale. He peddled his wares with dire descriptions of the ruin and death that would surely ensue should his target not buy what he was selling. When rebuffed by a potential customer, the lightning rod man threatens to spread slanderous stories about him to his neighbors. And though the customer in the story understood what the lightning rod man truly was and tried to warn his neighbors about him, he still had a vigorous trade in his product selling to his more susceptible fellow citizens who would not heed his admonitions.
But spite of my treatment, and spite of my dissuasive talk of him to my neighbors, the Lightning-rod man still dwells in the land; still travels in storm-time, and drives a brave trade with the fears of man.
Seems to me to be an accurate description of Trump and his followers who want to be afraid. Afraid of every threat and only Trump has the solution to keep you safe. Buy his lighting rods and you will be safe. If somebody calls him a crooked deceitful salesman, ignore them. It's beyond time for us to snap the lightning rod in half, grab the dark lightning king by the collar and toss him out the door and tell him to never return.

(2,419 posts)this story points out that Trump's methods aren't new, nor are the characteristics and vulnerabilities of humans. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Even lab rats start to learn after you shock them a few times, you'd think people would have the same capacity.

(1,897 posts)I never heard of this story. It only took about 5 minutes to read. It's full of little Trump-tells. "Those Canadians are fools", "I have the best references", "mine is the only true rod", "I will publish your infidel notions!". I could see him selling Trump brand lightning rods.
