The author of this piece, an Army veteran, goes into detail like I have not thought existed as she talks about what the purpose of the AR-15 is for. Read for yourselves and then discuss. A view both sides of the issue should understand.

(22,976 posts)The standard round for the AR-15 looks like a miniature missile, and it comes at (and into) its victims with incredible damaging power.
As described in the Washington Post a couple of days ago, one of the Florida victims was hit in the arm, the bullet then exited and re-entered her arm, exited again and entered her chest cavity, finally lodging in her spine, killing her.
The Las Vegas shooter was raining death onto his victims with this weapon. In fact, AR-15-style rifles have been present in every major mass shooting in the past several years.
The AR-15 is designed to kill humans in groups and with deadly efficiency. There is no earthly reason for anyone whos not in law enforcement or the military to own one of these killing machines. It needs to be BANNED.

(68,735 posts)weapon ...AR15. It needs to banned along with all assault weapons period. We will win his fight eventually...just a matter of how many innocents die first. Maybe this is the tipping point... the gun humpers love their guns more than their kids but others are waking up and when this becomes an important issue for average voters, the gun humpers are done.

(43,049 posts)we still had m-14's. Even worse, in ROTC we had m-1's
Anyway, she's absolutely right-- military arms are designed to kill as many people as possible as fast as possible. And the military does not allow you to wander around with your assigned weapon just to look like a badass.
The clowns walking around in cammie fatigues, field packs, and other military drag are scary as hell. You walk around with a weapon if you are going to the range or going into action. Not to look cool. (Unless you're in a formation with arms, and then they better be unloaded.)

(16,245 posts)Seriously, why do people have such a fetish about guns?
This one in particular has been used in EVERY SINGLE MASS SHOOTING. This means purchase and possession should be banned immediately.
Several European countries have very strict education and licensing requirements and I think we should model our gun policy after that. Not this non-policy we have now.

Of course, it may be true that ARs are used more in recent years.
Nevertheless, it is instructive that we should expect mass shootings to continue with non-AR rifles.

(34,185 posts)It didn't have a few features I can now own, but it was essentially the same rifle Lanza used in Newtown (and CT had a state level AWB).
Oh and I bought several 30 round mags too.

(47,209 posts)I find that most gun lovers enjoy bothering people who favor gun control more than they do the actual guns. Miserable, paranoid, but at least they have their guns to love.

(34,185 posts)And that the versions that were available were capable of the mass shootings we see after the so-called ban.
No bragging. ARs were for sale.

(60,027 posts)As an avowed pacifist now, it turns my stomach to even type the above words, but can you refute them? I cant. Every weapon that a US Army soldier uses has the express purpose of killing human beings. That is what they are made for. The choice rifle for years has been some variant of what civilians are sold as an AR-15. Whether it was an M-4 or an M-16 matters little. The function is the same, and so is the purpose. These are not deer rifles. They are not target rifles. They are people killing rifles. Lets stop pretending theyre not.

(16,672 posts)and while I'm not a gun fan in general this is exactly the point I make with the gun nuts. People just do NOT need an assault rifle,, they are not trained to use them and there's no need in a non war scenario.
Let me add.. my dad was a cop. We had a gun in the house when I was growing up. I'm not against them in theory but not everyone should have access to them either.
