A logical choice here is to ban the sale of semi-auto rifles nationwide.

Just ban by action and style (rifle) and limit any semi-auto handgun for sale to a pistol cartridge and no more than 10 round magazine. Like in 1994, ban sale of any magazine over 10 rounds, for any caliber. This would be a simple regulation on commerce and not require buybacks or confiscation. You wouldn't need to - the limit on sale would result in a frenzy of collectors driving the price way up and limiting the ability of most individuals intending harm to buy one. It wouldn't stop someone like the LV shooter, but most mass shooters are young and within a decade mass shootings by semi-auto rifles would be practically non-existent. A ban on high capacity mags will have a similar effect, reducing the chances of another VA Tech style massacre.

We can predict how this will play out. The Repugs will say if the laws & procedures already in place were followed this school shooting could have been prevented. The FBI, the local police and the school admin will get the blame for not following up on the obvious clues about the shooter.

The guns will be overlooked. All the comments from Trump and Rick Scott is simply useless rhetoric to make them literallylook like they are concerned and will do something.

Paul Ryan says it - let's not jump to conclusions yet.

Many people have been whipped into a frenzy to alienate and blame the mentally ill, and many Americans have relaxed so much on basic American values like equal protection of the laws that they will support discrimination and oppression.

Once there is no new supply we can start in on the mountain of existing guns.

We don't permit people who show they haven't learned to drive to drive cars. We should do the same with guns. Show that you know how to carry, store and use a gun safely. Show that you are not a felon, or crazy. (Toss this line to gun nuts. Do you want felons and insane people carrying guns? They will say no.)

Limit magazine rounds to 12 rounds or fewer. IMHO, if you need more than five or ten to hit a target, you need shooting lessons, not more bullets..

I have stopped going to gun shows because I see too many goofuses treating guns like they were toys. They wave around loaded firearms with the safeties off, they point guns, jokingly, at people. They throw loaded guns with the safeties off into their back seats.
