I don't know that there is any way to totally protect schools in a free society.

Some schools lock the doors. How did this guy get in? How did he get in un-noticed, carrying a rifle?

It could be that the school was negligent, since it's a safe area usually. The school didn't take precautions, seems like.

can't let the Repugs off the hook with only thinking they can lock down schools or have armed guards in every school. No - it must be something more. We have to force them into stricter gun laws.

That large a school needs some kind of security. After school is in session, there should be limited, supervised access only.
I graduated in 1974 and we had a parking lot guard we called the Park Narc. To get in or out of the student parking area, you had to show a pass or note from home.

You can get OUT, but the door is locked to anyone trying to come in.

Some schools have had drills and given instructions on what to do. In this case, one of the students said she was outside when the fire drill went off, and she heard about six shots. She went BACK INTO the school to find a closet to hide in! Instead of just leaving and going home or somewhere.
