(37,648 posts)I don't think any of the mass shooters so far have been "refugees" or "illegal immigrants" or Dreamers.

(28,864 posts)Today I heard a wealthy bigoted women say: This is my country,
and I won't let anybody ruin it.
By "anybody" she meant immigrants and non-whites.

(4,429 posts)would he - possibly - also call himself white Latino?
I have a good friend who is PR and she would say she is Latina - (she wouldn't say 'white' - just latina - )
MaryMagdaline
(6,855 posts)People say Hispanic or Latin). "Latino" is generally a West Coast Word. I am not saying he can't be of Mexican or Central American heritage but the majority of Hispanics in Dade and Broward are white hispanics. In broward, a lot of Colombians and Venezuelans. He was white in the photo. Hispanics here refer to other whites as anglos, not whites but I hardly hear the younger ones say anything but their own ethnicity, i.e. Peruvian, Panamanian, Irish etc. A Cuban or Venezuelan might call me, an Irish American "American," or "Anglo" but not white.
I never knew Anglos were called white until I saw the movie, Mi Vida Loca. My husband never heard that either.

(4,429 posts)I lived in Tally for about 16 years (and g-ville for 2) - there isn't much of a hispanic/latin population up there. I worked in the prisons, though - but those guys (and women) called themselves by their country -
My friend lives 'down south' (south FL).

(6,855 posts)Latina and she is from New York. I wonder if Puerto Ricans in Florida use that term. I have not heard them use it. My very close friend born in New York but settled in Miami uses Hispanic or Latin but she is my age, pushing 60.

(6,855 posts)Identify as Republicans here and with Evangelicals. There is political unanimity among republicans and no backlash will be expected. This is a horror show but we should not expect ethnic backlash from the deplorables. I expect we will find he is one of them. I mean capital D Deplorable. He obviously is a deplorable human being.

(37,648 posts)Unless they moved there later, I guess. The Indians and Spanish, when Spain went in there, merged or whatever you call it.
That's what I've seen in documentaries. The Mayans and whoever else settled the Central and S America areas.
Hispanics from Spain are white. I don't know about Cuba.
MaryMagdaline
(6,855 posts)White/European immigrants, not mixed, i.e. The white flight from Cuba and Latin America. If you only knew Cuban immigrants and not the real Cubans, you would think they had no African/Cubans although the Island is majority or plurality black. Same with the Venezuelans here. If they have Indian ethnicity it is not evident. Argentina is the whitest country in the Western Hemisphere and almost all their immigrants to south Florida are white.

(37,648 posts)What ARE you talking about? My post didn't say anything about white.
And YES...we are ALL talking about how Trump will use this as opportunity to not pass DACA, if the shooter is Hispanic.

(1 post)I figure by now everyone realizes that he was adopted. We don't know his background. Nor do we know if he was raised as a Latino (yes, there is a difference). Here is a quote from the white supremacist organization he apparently was involved in:
He would always talk about how he felt whites were a bit higher than everyone, Charo said. Hed be like, My people are over here industrializing the world and starting new things, while your people [meaning blacks and Latinos] are just taking up space.
I'd say he was an angry young white man.
