This is not what growing up is supposed to be like and yet this is becoming a new normal here in the US.

We all need to be outraged that children in the US are now so easily subjected to this. This is what our culture has lead us to, and no amount of thoughts and prayers will fix this mess.

(50,559 posts)I went to that nest of vipers. Ugh.
The InfoWars people found a photo of the shooter dressed in a shirt with a Soviet flag on it, and they found a Democratic voter registration for a "Nicolas Cruz" who lives in Broward. The shooter spells his name Nikolaus and elections officials are anal about spelling, but we won't hold that against little Alex, now will we?
So...this school was shot up by a commie Democrat, at least according to the InfoWars people.
We also learn that Ross Ulbricht was given a "life sentence with no possibility of parole" for "running a website."
This is the website he was running...

I don't know how many other websites view "putting out hits on people" as an ordinary course of business, but Ulbricht did that very thing six different times.

To read the stories is one thing.
To hear accounts from survivors is one thing.
To see the EMS folks outside shaking their heads is one thing.
To see virtually live, in progress unedited video feels like a completely different thing.
Something's got to change.

(41,140 posts)with injuries, scars and economic effects, so MSM needs to be made do a lot more personal, close up coverage of the scenes. In- the-moment action, the fear, panic and wounding of kids and adults recorded on phones. If traditional media IS doing much of this, I'm missing it.
Not a big social media user, but what I see on boards like this is shocking and sickening. This declining country of weekly shootings and growing hate and fear- how much worse can it get, and why is nothing being done. The same issues over and over.
Americans are 'too sensitive' to view atrocities in depth via real live footage is maybe one explanation, but it's BS. Something needs to wake people up, run the actual first hand coverage, (not opinions by usual 'experts'), wall to wall on television channels and establishment media websites, day and night! Everything else in the media is wide open, why not the targets and victims recordings...

(19,564 posts)Otheres still live in a bubble of denial as to the prevalence and reality of these shootings.
Ive interacted with many people today who where shaken by this event which were new people to me. Im not saying it was this cell phone video that lead them to me, for some it was the news that this was the 18th shooting to take place in a school this year on the news this evening. I will say most of the reactions to this clip were more hopeful than Id expected.
I block RW trolls on my political social media, which Im open about. Not Republicans who are thoughtful, just troll like comment/accounts. Ive had this rule since 2013, so my followers expect a level of decency which I think leads to more open comments. I also only maintain 2Kish followers per account. I found out I cant manage more than that, which makes me a small fry. So, my experience will be limited to my small sample.

(10,878 posts)Closeup shots of dead mangled bodies, especially young children is the only answer now.
I cant believe Im saying that.
But, its true.
Law enforcement people I know have convinced me of this.
They say far away pics of dead bodies covered by blankets has no effect on a public desensitized by so much gun violence.
It must shock the senses.
But, our media will never do it.

(19,564 posts)Theyre not trained solders or police, theyre children in school. That wed expect them to react otherwise is a symptom of everything thats wrong with our culture right now.
Im not being hateful, Im just pointing out how we can easily be lead astray in our thinking under our current culture. Its inherently wrong to rob children of their sense of safety at school. Theres no excuses or exceptions. Weve failed them.
Bucky
(54,014 posts)I mean, a guy was firing a gun just out in the Hall. Of course some kids are going to scream. But the way they were all hunkered down shows the training doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
Active shooter training will not end the shooting spree. It only keeps a mob of students out of the way so that police officers can't identify and stop the shooter ASAP.
Of course it is horrifying to look at, but it would be even more terrifying if there was a mob of students rushing out through the Halls and out of doors all at once. And there probably would have been more than 17 killed in the ensuing chaos because the police would take longer to interdict the shooter.
Of course the real solution is ending the gun distribution.

(386 posts)This is outrageous...It is a problem that MUST be solved
1. We have to look at rescinding the corporate charter of the NRA (its chartered in NY state)
2. Hold the gun manufacturers legally liable for their product.
3. Use Big data analysis to spot, those likely to commit mass shootings and round them up.
It has to stop. We have to make it stop, even if our bought and paid for lawmakers will not. This is absolutely insane.

A reported shooting at a South Florida high school on Wednesday marks the countrys 18th school shooting of 2018, just 45 days into the year.
Thats an average of one school shooting every 60 hours thus far in 2018, more than double the number of school shootings recorded in any of the previous three years in that same period. Those numbers are according to data compiled by the gun control advocacy organization Everytown for Gun Safety, which defines a school shooting as any time a firearm is discharged on or around a campus.

(19,564 posts)Im worried this may seem voyeuristic to some now, and that is miles from my intentions. I just want their voices to be heard in the actual moment their lives were forever changed. Not later when theyre trying to be tough and downplaying the impact this had on them. Children, especially teens, are so complicated I thought it was important to hear them in this one harsh moment of reality.
None of these children are responsible for what was done to them today. All that burden lies on the heads of the adults who came before them who saw these events paths being paved and chose to turn blind eyes because they never thought it would touch them, or they were biased due to their political and personal beliefs.
