(61,695 posts)your school? At every school in my school district, modifications were made after 2012 (Sandy Hook) shooting to make certain the schools are locked up from the inside. The only way in is through the front office where the secretary buzzes you in after viewing you through glass. I doubt it is bullet-proof, but the school resource officer is right there with her.
I have slept much better knowing that no one can get in to any of the schools.
BigmanPigman
(51,603 posts)and we had a staff meeting about safety and my idiot principal didn't even know that all of the classroom doors could only be locked FROM THE OUTSIDE! I raised my hand and filled her in on this little fact. So does that answer your question?
Schools are full of holes and anyone can climb over a fence. Even my former first graders could scale a chain link fence like monkeys when they had to retrieve a ball from recess games.
Ilsa
(61,695 posts)Our elementary schools have high fences around the playgrounds so kids cannot climb out. We have no open windows for anyone to climb through.
Your school district seriously needs to make changes. It might take the parents harping on the school board, and perhaps passing a special initiative to tax and raise money to make necessary improvements to at least make it damn hard for a shooter to gain entry.
Good luck!

We have "lockdown" drills sometimes just as admin, but have not done anything with the actual kids in this respect.
While I have great confidence in our local authorities, when shit like this happens, it's scruples on the ground that helps you survive. I honestly don't know how I'd respond...or how I'd get my kids to be quiet and hidden...

I may not believe in the Bible as divinely inspired, but there is some wisdom to be found in its pages.
The verse that states, "The love of money is the root of all evil" is very appropriate here.
The gun nuts are dangerous enough in themselves, but it is the NRA and the gun manufacturers and the money they suck in and funnel back to the politicians to keep us running scared that are the root of the problem.
There have always been troubled people and hateful people. Their ability to inflict harm has grown exponentially due to advances in weapons technology and the increasing availability of said weapons.
Even the most rabid homicidal maniac couldn't kill as many people with an axe as a disgruntled pissant can with a semi-automatic.
The maniac's arm would tire out before his mania could run its course.
The loser in a lousy mood with a powerful gun could keep going as long as his supply of bullets and pathetic need for control hold out.
Guns that keep firing away don't take courage or skill or stamina to use. If you've got the money, you can take away lives in the dozens.
That's all it comes down to. Gun nuts may love guns, but the NRA loves money.
And as long as they can turn a profit, the lives of our citizens-- or even our children-- mean nothing.
In that, we are well and truly damned.
calimary
(81,295 posts)Every word.
I was thinking earlier today that - for all the assholes who mewl about how "guns don't kill people" or the "what-about'ers" who go directly to "but but but ... cars!" or "but but but ... knives!" - it's very likely easier to survive an assault by car or by knife. Or axe. Or baseball bat. Or fist. Or fill-in-the-blank-here. I suspect you're statistically more likely to survive an attack by any of the above mentioned implements. You are statistically no match for a gun. Particularly a really awful extreme instrument like the AK47.
Fortunately, there is some shaming now going on, and there should be a LOT more. I suggest anybody with a Twitter account spread this info from Bess Kalb, a TV comedy writer for Jimmy Kimmel's show. Name their names. Shine a bright light. Expose these fiends who are bought and paid for by the NRA.

(11,949 posts)I was disagreeing to a post saying that the kid in question was psychologically damaged and need lots of therepy to recover. The poster may be correct. But the odds do not back it up. Most people who experience trama come out of it fine.
We are hard wired for it since during most of our evolutionary history life was way more brutal and short than now.
Shit, I was being optimistic.
My post had nothing to do with guns and was narrowly tailored to the post I was replying for.
I guess you were disappointed not to see a continuation of the we are fucked up, the worse country and may as well just give up kind of post that prevail on this thread.
You have a nice evening.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)of course you're optimistic!
you have reason to hope, because chances are this shooting and its killings probably won't change a thing.
of course you're optimistic! unlike almost all of us, who are actually worried that the killings will get worse, people who are primarily worried about gun rights are the opposite, they're OPTIMISTIC!
in fact the only restrictions you actually advocate for, you're quick to say would be political suicide to pursue.
you're really smooth.
but sometimes you slip.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)And you brilliantly caught me! LOL
I am open in my views. I support the Democratic Party Platform that gun ownership is s constitutional right. Disagree with me you disagree with the party.
I also agree with the platform calling for tight restrictions.
You apparently confuse what I personally would like with what I think feasible.
I would like to ban all magazines capable of holding more than 8-10 rounds. If not 5 That one law alone would go miles to solving the gun problem.
However, I do believe that if we as a party make that a major part of our platform we will lose.
Too many people become single issues voters based on this one issue. We should not sacrifice our entire liberal agenda on a cross of gun control.
If you can not separate what you personally want with what is achievable, that is not my problem.
I also want s France or German style medical system. But for now I am happy to fight to save the ACA.
You really think heading into an election we look to do very well in our chances will be improved by making gun control a big part of our message. If so, then we have an honest disagreement of tactics, not necessarily a difference in goals.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)and just in the past few days you've said the Medicare for all is a "scheme".
and just in the past few days you've told us the Russia investigation doesn't help us or do anything.
and you raise you concern about any gun control, and even though you claim to support limiting the size of magazines, you say it's a political loser to actually pass it.
and you defended Scott Pruitt's use of first class to fly on government travel.
so PLEASE, don't lecture us by claiming you are one of us unless you actually are one of us.
and you aren't doing to convincing a job of showing you're one of us.

If you are going to critique my DU posting record, please do not edit in a way that cast aspersions on me.
You are correct that I do not support Medicare for all in our attempt to provide all Americans with affordable healthcare, which I think all democrats should support. I have consistently stated I had rather work toward a French style system using the ACA as a foundation rather than do one big change like the British did. I think it will give better results and more importantly I think it is achievable. Another reason I do not support Medicare for all is its real potential to divide the Democratic Party heading into 2020 as some on the political left make it a litmus test of being a real democrat. Kind of like you just did.
As for Russia/Mueller nothing will come of because no matter what is found the Republicans will support him. If we win the house and initiate impeachment the senate will not convict even if the house impeaches him. No one wants to hear that, but do you honestly disagree? The best we can do is take the house and stop the further bleeding till he is gone.
If we win the House we might be able to close the gun show loophole and have better background checks which most Americans support and would hope we can limit magazine size. But I am not convinced there is support among the majority of the American people to do so. That is where we need to work...ginning up support among the people.
And I do not really care if department secretaries fly first class, Democratic or republican. I we found out Holder or one of Obamas secretaries was flying first class most here would defend them. However, since I posted that we have discovered 2 new things. He got a exception to fly on a foreign airline and that Airline was Air Emerites which is a limo in the sky. That is Bullshit and should be roundly condemned.
Finally, who the fuck are you to decide who is one of us? I have been here 2 years and have been pretty consistent in my posting. When I have stepped over the line I apologize. I do not start OPs with the intention of stirring up shit or getting posts hidden. When I change my mind I admit I was wrong. I am a star member with a 100% chance of serving on juries.
Just because I do agree with you 100% of the time or have been a member of the Democratic Party for less time than you does not make me any less valuable member of our party or DU.
And I will never again type a post this long on my iPhone again! Next time you will have to wait till I am at my computer.
You have a nice day.

(14,337 posts)at one fairly new school I worked at in Florida. No doors in the hallways. No windows on the outside. The only way to get inside these was from inside the classrooms. The doors (no peep holes) could only be locked from inside the pods.
I don't know what the original purpose of these were. Hurricanes? Tornadoes? When we had a real lockdown with a gunman on campus, we took the students inside these pods. Staff carried radios with them. We could hear police reports and could hear when the all clear was given.
Of course, none of this would help if the shooter was a student who knew about these Pods. This was at a Middle School.

(15,646 posts)and return our country to sanity? I'm increasingly feeling like that is what it will take. With Russian meddling/hacking, GOP/Trump poll numbers rising on the back of minuscule scraps tossed to workers from the faux tax cuts, and the abject failure of mainstream media, I am losing confidence in our hope for 2018.
America is being gas-lighted like never before. What seemed apocryphal as a nation only a year ago, now seems increasingly acceptable if not outright positive to far too many.

They said the Nikolas Cruz had help from his younger brother who was a current student, they took an Uber to school his morning. Nicholas had been sent to an alternative school, had brought knives to school before. Brothers were avid hunters, their foster mother just recently died.
I can't take this anymore. Enough enough.

(82,849 posts)Nicholas Kruz found it far easier to get his hands on firearms than to access the health care system. And the way our society is oriented, it's far more socially acceptable to shoot up a school than seek treatment for a mental health problem.
