He made all sorts of excuses and arguments to prop himself up as the only real mouthpiece of The One True Gawd when trying to make money off - err, "convert" all the poor Gentile schmucks unhappy with Imperial Rome. He also was the primary push separating Christianity from Judaism, even as he and his fellow-travelers were co-opting the Talmud for the "Old Testament portion of their church teachings.

When you do a little study, you find that early Church politics had very little to do with the supposed teachings of Christ - just as most modern "Evangelical" or "Reformed" Christianity and similar Christianist movements (i.e., Mormons, 7th Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses) have very little to do with those teachings.
They're all about using the Fear of God and Death to gain power within the group and over converts.
