I am sick of reading "if they don't like it, they can get a job"

Comments containing some form of "Get a job" under articles and news feeds on trumps bizzare food stamp plan. Rubes think that a job would cure the need for food stamp help.

I just do not understand people who imagine the feel of money being taken right out of their pockets, when discussing assistance for the less fortunate?

. . .but when you count people who recently lost a job and needed SNAP to get by, or were on SNAP and recently got a job the number goes to 80% of SNAP recipients have a job, had one or now have a new job within one year of accepting SNAP.

80%! This renders the "get a job" comment essentially moot.

and need food stamps and why, with all the money we (uncritically) pour into the military, is this even a thing?

They imagine a zero-sum game in which no one else can gain without their losing.

Of course, the same small minds may be ready to believe in magical tax cuts that will lift all boats.

Lazy, or people that should suffer the consequences of their mistakes (like using drugs or having children out of wedlock).

"I work hard for my money. Why should I pay for their laziness and mistakes with my taxes? If you want to help them out, you feed them or give your money to charity."

Then there is the "we should help but it shouldn't be government" argument. This argument is really similar, and asserts that churches are better positioned to differentiate between those that "truly deserve help" and "those that are milking the system."

It's like a lot of America has become a mashup of every Dickens villain and Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life."
