Voter totals on local elections embarrassing.

While we sit here and worry about the national elections, take a look at your local elections for mayor, school board, county commissioner. My Dad used to say these elected officials could screw with your life more than any President could. Yesterday we had a city council race in our fairly large ward and a grand total of 373 people voted.

The Oklahoma City mayoral race was a joke with similar percentages. Why is it so hard for people to get off their butts and exercise their right to vote. It doesn't take long, no longer than stopping at Starbucks for a 4 dollar coffee.

It is the same with school bond issues, city bond issues etc. nobody shows up! Then the paper is full of people griping about the mayor or city council, the school whatever. If you don't show up, shut up!

City council and school board do not show party affiliation. I don't buy that you don't show up because it may not be competitive.

Yesterday’s city council race with nearly 20,000 registrations to vote the turnout was 274. We have a Dem state representative because we banded together but the city council is all Republicans even though we don’t officially list party affiliations. The banks and churches run the city.

Plus it hurts Democrats because some people don't have the ability or the knowledge to do it. Not all old people vote Republican and many poor people and those outside of urban areas are not as tech savvy. We sure need to find another way that is for sure.

The result is you have a predominately older and hyper-religious demographic over represented in local elections, which has a lot to do with why southern states teach mythology as fact and fact as mythology.
