... What Coats said: “There should be no doubt that Russia perceived its past efforts as successful,” said Coats, “and views the 2018 U.S. midterm elections as a potential target for Russian influence operations.” Coats said “we expect Russia to continue using propaganda, social media, false flag personas, sympathetic spokesmen, and other means to influence to try to build on its wide range of operations and exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States.”

Later, when the whole panel was asked if Russia would stop its influence campaign, officials unanimously said it would not ...

The government’s top intelligence officials say Russia will likely reprise its election meddling in the upcoming midterms—and that President Donald Trump has not told them to take any specific action to stop Kremlin interference.

This striking testimony came on Tuesday during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing featuring the heads of the CIA, the FBI, and the National Security Agency, along with the director of national intelligence.

Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) appeared to surprise the witnesses by asking if Trump had specifically urged them to address the Russian threat ...

testifying before congress about this. Just amazing.

How about all those people who always say voting doesn't make any difference? A lot of those won't change, but how about the others they infect with their facile excuses for ignorance and irresponsibility? Will saying that seem less respectable in future? At least for a while?

they weren't instructed to. None said they were instructed not to. I think they all have counterintelligence divisions, but for sure all have really smart people in the computer line. And all our other intelligence institutions.

Just guessing, but what I imagine they cannot do is in any way deter Russia with a threat to hurt them if our elections were attacked. That'd be Trump's job...

At least they are testifying publicly before congress on this subject. Big deal. Just imagine if they were not?

Deep breaths.

3. U.S. intelligence chiefs warn of Russian 2018 election interference

Feb 2018

By Robert Schlesinger, Managing Editor for Opinion | Feb. 13, 2018, at 5:05 p.m

... "Frankly, the United States is under attack," Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday ...

"With respect to Russian influence efforts, let me be clear: The Russians utilize this tool because it's relatively cheap, it's low risk, it offers what they perceive as plausible deniability and it's proven to be effective at sowing division," Coats said. "We expect Russia to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokesmen and other means to influence to try to build on its wide range of operations and exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States. There should be no doubt that Russia perceived ... its past efforts as successful and views the 2018 U.S. midterm elections as a potential target for Russian influence operations."

Mike Pompeo, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, added: "We have seen Russian activities and intentions to have an impact on the next election cycle." And Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency: "This is not going to change or stop" ...

... "Russia-related intelligence that might draw Trump's ire is in some cases included only in the written assessment and not raised orally," The Washington Post reported in December. We now know of course that Trump basically doesn't read the written brief at all, so it's a good place to stash information if you're trying to hide that which could upset him. A second former intelligence official told the Post: "If you talk about Russia, meddling, interference – that takes the <presidential daily intelligence briefing> off the rails" ...

WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence agencies expect Russia to ramp up its efforts to meddle in the U.S. political system through hacking and social media manipulation, according to a worldwide threat assessment released Tuesday morning.

"Foreign elections are critical inflection points that offer opportunities for Russia to advance its interests both overtly and covertly," says the assessment. "The 2018 U.S. midterm elections are a potential target for Russian influence operations."

The nation's intelligence chiefs presented their view of the top threats confronting the nation before the Senate intelligence committee ...

"We assess that the Russian intelligence services will continue their efforts to disseminate false information via Russian state-controlled media and covert online personas about U.S. activities to encourage anti-U.S. political views" ...

(Bloomberg) -- FBI Director .. Wray said he won’t discuss the Russian investigation with .. Trump.

"I am not going to discuss the investigation in question with the president, much less provide information from that investigation to him,” Wray said at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Tuesday.

Wray declined to say whether it was a conflict-of-interest for Trump to declassify a memo from House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes on the Russia investigation ...

Wray said it was hard to see how a memo that’s only three-and-a-half pages could accurately distill information provided by the FBI, which consisted of thousands of documents and participation in multiple hearings ...

BY BRANDON CARTER - 02/13/18 09:40 PM EST

Former CIA analyst and National Security Council spokesman Ned Price accused President Trump of giving Russia "the green light" to meddle in upcoming US elections by failing to punish the country for interfering in the 2016 election.

"We have heard that President Trump has personally himself done absolutely nothing to help our national security establishment and infrastructure stop the next round of Russian meddling. That should be hugely troubling to all of us," Price said .. Tuesday ...

"Both what he has done and has not done, are very clear signals to Moscow - a clear signal that they have the green light to continue" ...

... he still scoffs at the suggestion that Russia interfered in the election.

In Trump's mind, the issue of collusion between his campaign and the Russian government is indistinguishable from the notion that Russia meddled in the election to help him win ///

Despite Trump's confusion, the former issue is actively being investigated by special prosecutor Robert Mueller and multiple congressional committees, while the latter has been affirmed and put to bed by the entire U.S. intelligence apparatus. Trump, however, considers any suggestion of Russian interference bogus because he views it as an argument that he needed outside help to win the election ...

9. What Is Trump's Policy on Russia?
Wed Feb 14, 2018, 03:07 AM

By Zach Dorfman

Americans are unaccustomed to getting news about their own government from the Kremlin. On January 30th, Russian officials disclosed that the director of the SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence service, had recently visited Washington for a meeting with Mike Pompeo, director of the CIA, to discuss counterterrorism issues. That sparked revelations, first reported by the Washington Post, that the director of Russia's security service had also met with Pompeo, and the director of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence service, had been in Washington at the same time. One former senior intelligence community official told me that having all three heads of Russia's intelligence services in Washington simultaneously was highly unusual – at best – but it is worth emphasizing that we only know about these meetings because the Russian government, and leakers within the U.S. intelligence community, informed us of them.

The same week the Russian spy chiefs' visit was made public, the Trump administration announced it was declining to enforce sanctions, begrudgingly signed by Trump in July 2017, punishing individuals for doing business with the Russian defense or intelligence sectors. This provision, the Trump administration argued, would require them to sanction Americans allies, such as India, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, who all purchase Russian weaponry. Later that same day – and mere hours before the legal deadline – the Treasury Department released a list of Putin-connected oligarchs; the list was supposed to shine light on the corrupt intersection between the Russian state and its industrial titans, but was nearly copied in toto from a Forbes Magazine list of the world's wealthiest Russians. Administration officials didn't even pretend to operate in good faith here. The oligarchs list, which was seen as a potential prelude to a new round of sanctions against the named individuals, was instead treated by administration officials as a tossed-off farce.

The fact, then, that Russia – overtly hostile to the American-led international order, a kleptocratic mafia state with a viciously effective intelligence apparatus – is the only country that President Trump appears reflexively inclined to give the benefit of the doubt, seems, under the circumstances, pretty odd. It is perfectly reasonable to argue that the U.S. should pursue better relations with Russia on points of convergence and mutual interest. It is bizarre to do so when this strategy is coupled with utter contemptuousness about most other long-standing U.S. alliances and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions to serious geopolitical challenges. And it is unspeakably more jarring when the one country with which the president seems interested in seeking a rapprochement happens to have masterminded a cyber-espionage campaign that helped ensure his electoral victory ...

He said that his biggest concern was that the Russians, if they see a Blue wave, might change votes in favor of Dems, to the point it would be obvious voter totals were messed with, and blame that hacking on North Korea or Iran. He said the headline on Sputnik the next day would read “Democrats steal election with help of North Korea”. He implied that the chaos and undermining of the basis of our voting system is exactly what Russia would want.
