Washington (CNN) - A federal court in Washington will unseal documents that have stayed secret for two decades from independent counsel Ken Starr's investigation of then-president Bill Clinton, following a request from CNN.
Some of the records from Starr's grand jury proceedings are public already -- but only reprinted in the independent counsel's 1998 report to Congress. Until now, the federal court had listed the cases as sealed.
Monday, Chief Judge Beryl Howell said the court will release some of the documents that have stayed secret for the past 20 years. The court will also revisit whether other documents should be made public as well.
CNN has argued that the records related to Clinton's grand jury could show how special counsel Robert Mueller may pursue testimony from President Donald Trump as well as other grand jury appearances and documents. For instance, court filings in the Starr report show how Clinton's and Starr's lawyers negotiated for six months before the president testified before the grand jury.

(25,263 posts)It could be a double-edged sword. It might help in the way CNN is intending but on the other hand it is going back to bring up something that ended for the Clintons many, many years ago. We don't need to drag those people back into the news - which is exactly what the Repugs and Trump will do with the release of these documents. They'll invent some new controversy to distract.

(19,359 posts)as Jack Gillis and I maintained 20 years ago!
Kenneth Starr was allowed to extend his Whitewater special investigation into "The Lewinsky Affair" on the basis of a three-page document he implied/maintained was crafted either by Clinton or my his men with the express intent to suborn perjury in a separate trial.
Over seven months, Jack Gillis and I demonstrated that the "Talking Points" were not written by Clinton or his men (in fact, Clinton in a deposition which was secret at the time, contradicted statements in "The Talking Points" ).
We made it onto CNN's Burden of Proof, many talk radio programs as on Pacifica Radio, and had columns devoted to our work by Joe Conason and Tom Oliphant. As we continued to make our findings and publish them on web outlets and in the media, Starr delayed his report over and over, to the effect that Congress had less of a guilty-of-impeachment furor by the time it got to them.
I believe that Linda Tripp and Lucianne Goldberg wrote the three-page memo to set up Clinton.

What do you think was the basis of the Clinton Derangement Syndrome? The hatred was visceral.
