Making immigration "merit" based on your worth to society sets an ugly tone for the vulnerable population in the US. Work based programs like Medicaid, Food Stamps, Housing, et al. Trump/GOP policy ideas set "merit" based for anyone getting government assistance.
So if you have no economic value and are not producing and justifying your value in this new "competitive merit" based society then you are expendable and even unnecessary. So being sick, disabled, poor, a minority, imperfect, unacceptable in some way or other category you have no right to exist. You are just excess baggage.
The real problem is that the GOP really does have eugenic even "master race" mentality that it is willing to pursue such policies. They have the same mind frame as the Nazis did. So if you look at the complaint by the guest on FOX that Olympic team was too diverse the GOP attitude should be really clear. No one from GOP ever complained about that.
The "merit" based meme is a very dangerous one because we now are being it being played out in GOP plans. And those plans will include Social Security and Medicare in the end. The GOP does not care that these benefits were earned and paid for. They need that money to give to their donors who also believe that these programs are not deserved.
The rich and powerful fully believe that they are the ONLY ONES entitled to the benefits of this country. And they do not care whose children they sacrifice in the military to guarantee their protection.
