I'm going to brutally honest with you here: I don't have time for this shit. I always thought the end of the world would have a different feel to it — more coppery-tasting somehow. In happier times, back when our country had a president and a functional, if fractured system of checks and balances, I might have been tempted to spend an hour or more picking at various strands of thought on the vast divide between Christianity and those who gather today to 'pray for our president.'
I want you to know I tried, but a funny thing happened on the way to crafting today's Sunday Sermon™ — a Google search of the phrase "by your works" and "Bible" spit up the name Rahab. Here's where the algorithm kicks in — English language preferences set from a North American, U.S.-based ISP = "Rahab was a whore." My first thought was, "of course she is — consider the source."
"In the Christian New Testament, the Epistle of James and the Epistle to the Hebrews follow the tradition set by the translators of the Septuagint in using the Greek word "?ό???" (pórnē, which is usually translated to English as "harlot" or "prostitute" ) to describe Rahab.
"William L. Lyons has observed that biblical interpreters have viewed Rahab as a model of hospitality, mercy, faith, patience, and repentance in her interaction with Joshua's spies. Thus the harlot of Jericho became a paragon of virtue."
Words matter, but in the end it's not what you say, it's what you do. Given an opportunity to support peace, stand on principle and become the peacemaker his faith commands — Pence sat.
