Have Democrats used the word "racist" too often to describe our opponents?

I just was watching Meghan McCain on Van Jones and she makes a point that she remembers that her father was called a racist, that Bush was called a racist and that Romney was called a racist.

The difference, I think, is that only some fringe elements called those Presidential candidates racist. I know I never did. I may have pointed out that each of them were insensitive to the needs of minorities or that there were many people in their party who were racist (Jeff Sessions sure is). But, in any event, perhaps the word racist was overused in the past, and as a result, we are paying a price, now.

Let's use the old story of the boy who cried wolf, when there really wasn't a wolf. When there really was one, nobody believed him.

But, that's the point of the story. In the end, there really was a fucking wolf and Trump is that wolf. He is a racist. All you have to do is play back the tapes or read his tweets.

And FYI, the repug party is the white peoples' party which is another term for racist party.

That hasn't changed since the dixiecrats left the Democratic Party in the mid-60s.

that's the whole point. Not every Republican is a racist. Jeff Flake isn't, john McCain isn't, my Governor, Charlie Baker, isn't, Susan Collins isn't, George W. Bush isn't. A majority of Republicans may be racist, but they're not all racist.

It has diluted that word, so when we really have a racist in the White House, that description doesn't carry the same weight.

"In the end, there really was a wolf".

Trump's that wolf.

B/c I remember a hurricane called Katrina that hit New Orleans a few years ago - Dubya and his administration didn't do SHIT to help the minorities in the Superdome/New Orleans. If I'm not mistaken he and McCain were eating cake the day it hit!

McCain has had many racist comments about Vietnamese and Muslim people. Did you know he voted against MLK's holiday?

I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, but those two don't deserve to be at the forefront any Civil Rights discussions.

I think they prioritize issues that help white America ahead of minorities.

But the term "racist" should be reserved for people who really think the white race is superior to any other.

If McCain, Bush and Romney are racist, it kinda excuses Trump. It dilutes the meaning.

suppose they did nothing to separate themselves from racists like Sessions in their party? In some respects, each was more dangerous to POC than old Jeff Beauregard because they actively portrayed themselves as unbiased and caring.

They did not openly use racial epithets, burn crosses in peoples' yards or lynch anyone. They were far too "decent" for any of that and they no doubt genuinely disapproved of all such "uncivilized" behavior. But, they stood silent while all this and more took place. They used their privilege and their power to further the interests and the fortunes of themselves and others "like them". In plain language, they lived lives based on the assumption that Sessions and the cross burners and those in the lynch mobs were right :. they---white men---were better people than those with more melanin and, therefore, of course they should have better, safer, more prosperous lives.

And, because they pulled it off with a smile and a nod instead of a rope and a hood, they are "not racists" to some.

To be fair though, I do think we need more shades of term.

You have people who are racially insensitive, who just don't have a clue because they never interacted with people from different backgrounds, through to straight up white supremacists.

Trump is a white supremacist. Your other three examples fall in various parts of the scale.

But they should always be called out on it because being silent is being complicit.

Many support policies that hurt poor people, which disproportionately affects minorities leading Democrats to call those Republicans racists. But that makes it appear that the policy changes are racially based when in fact many or most who benefit from them are white, which only convinces white voters that Democrats don't care about them. This is all done in order to avoid a discussion that neither party wants to talk about - class warfare. Though some Democrats are starting to talk about it more.

than it is for them to actually be a racist. (And anyone who was paying attention and wasn't themselves racist probably saw Romney's comments to the NAACP, or McCain's votes against MLK Day and the 1990 Civil Rights Act, and thought, "well, if it quacks like a duck"...)

They are racists! We should be calling it for what it is but we tried to take the high road and be politically correct. However these days being politically correct is frowned upon. Mostly because certain people want to be free to use racist and anti women rhetoric. You know they wanted to be able to tell you what they really think. Fine. It works both ways. But if one acts like a racist, then one should be prepared to be called a racist.

Just saying...

There's overt racism of the type that the KKK and Nazis profess, and there's more subtle racism like Mitt Romney's 47% of the population are lazy and just want free stuff comment.

Trump is guilty of the former. McCain and Romney are guilty of the latter.

So in other words, no.
