(7,402 posts)It should be federal infrastructure. Period.
I think it's being addressed by Democrats quite heavily. It's just not going to change in GOP states until the hacking starts favoring Democrats.
Hmmmmm....

(13,390 posts)Elections are left to states because it would be ridiculous for the federal government to run school board and local office election in the US and it's territories.
There is also no affirmative right to vote explicitly conferred by the Constitution. Only amendments that prohibit interference. State constitutions do have affirmative voting rights delineated. Overriding them would be a huge mistake.

(7,402 posts)Federal oversight would be an absolute good in certain states where the SOS is a full-on crook or compromised. Equal protection -- in a Red State where Democratic votes are routinely discarded or prevented, Americans aren't allowed to practice democracy. So if all politics is truly local, some localities are absolutely unrepresented. How is that a logical stance to allow this to continue? Some places are just going to be gangster-run colonies and others democratic paradise, and that's somehow okay?
'There is also no affirmative right to vote explicitly conferred by the Constitution.' There's a bit of lawlerly gobbledygook that negates the entire spirit of the enterprise itself, right up there with 3/5s and using equal protection to elect GWB. Good lord. What's the federal government good for if not for preventing human slavery returning to Alabama, which it most certainly would?
I don't care about the damned words. I care that democracy works if it's allowed to, and devolves into idiot tribalism when it's not. Clearly electronic voting should be declared federally illegal, and election standards mandated that guarantee every citizen's right to vote.
Clearly. Come on.

(13,390 posts)Without it we lose our affirmative right to vote.
Human slavery is constitutional and alive and well and present across the country.
The 13th Amendment: Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.[1]
The Constitution is severely flawed, but it's what we have to work with. It's actually our saving grace that elections are local. If THIS federal government were running all elections across the country, where do you think that would lead? There are locals that are Democratic strongholds. We need to not sacrifice them to the federal government.

(13,390 posts)Paper ballots are not infallible. I think it would be a good idea for those who feel passionately to run for SOS, county clerk, and get jobs in those offices.

(13,390 posts)Paper is not infallible. This requires a more thoughtful approach than a simplistic ban on alternatives we have developed because of the 2000 problems with paper ballots.

(109,009 posts)all paper mail-in and drop-off ballots in Washington and Oregon for years. The only disadvantage is we don't get instant results.

(2,064 posts)There is an audit trail and we can actually count the votes by hand if necessary.
If there is no paper trail, the voting machines should be replaced with paper for 2018

(94,792 posts)As for me, I'll rely on the fact that no political figure claims that they lost because of vote hacking (which would be an easy excuse to claim).
