Elon Musk's launch yesterday was, by far, the most expensive automobile ad ever created. We're going to see images of that Tesla Roadster just about everywhere, and Tesla won't have to pay for them to appear.
Brilliant, but not cost-effective, I think. How many Roadster's will Musk's company have to sell to break even? Impossible.
Luckily, Musk has other plans for his space launch system. Still, it made for a very effective advertising strategy...

(9,897 posts)That - FAME - is the currency of the realm and worth more than any dollar signs these days.
Still, I was captivated by the twin reusable rocket landings more than at anytime since the early days of the shuttle, and rekindling the imagination and inventive spirit of the American public may be the ultimate reward for this launch...and there is no price tag for that!

(20,888 posts)He launched a big launch vehicle with no industrial payload. There aren't many people that need a launch vehicle of that size. He's gambling on a new market opening up in both his major industries. It's more of a gamble than people think, hence the need for marketing gimmicks. Still given all the miserable billionaires and millionaires in this country, it's nice to see one that seems to actual enjoy being rich and doing things with money.

This was a demonstration and a commercial for heavy space lift capability.
He had to lift something, both from a demonstration of capability standpoint, and and weight and balance standpoint.
Putting in a car, instead of say a tank of water, or a ton of iron was absolutely brilliant.
