Republicans pissed at WHO for discovering RoundUp Causes Cancer. NOT The Onion..

GOP threatens to cut off U.S. funding for the World Health Organization's cancer research over its finding that an active ingredient in herbicide Roundup is probably carcinogenic to humans.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican lawmakers are threatening to cut off U.S. funding for the World Health Organization’s cancer research program over its finding that the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup is probably carcinogenic to humans.

House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith said Tuesday that the 2015 conclusion by the International Agency for Research on Cancer was fundamentally flawed and relied on cherry-picked science. The Texas lawmaker said he has serious concerns about anti-industry bias and a lack of transparency within the program, which is based in Lyon, France.

. . .

IARC’s program assesses the hazard of whether chemicals can cause cancer in humans, often relying on studies where high doses were fed or injected into rats and mice to see whether they would develop tumors. The EPA’s risk assessments, which sometimes rely on industry-funded studies, look at the long-term threat pesticides and herbicides pose based on the anticipated uses and the relatively low levels of exposure expected for humans and animals.

. . .

Records compiled by the watchdog group Center for Responsive Politics show Monsanto has spent heavily on federal lobbying in recent years, with more than $4.3 million in spending during 2017. The company’s executives and political action committee made about $600,000 in federal political donations during the 2016 election cycle, with the bulk of the cash going to farm-state Republicans.

Jennifer Sass, a scientist with the advocacy group Natural Resources Defense Council, defended the IARC’s results at the congressional hearing, saying the well-respected international group was the target of a well-financed campaign by the pesticide industry seeking to discredit its findings.

“This hearing is about the ability of a public health agency to call a carcinogen a carcinogen, even if it makes a huge amount of money for a powerful corporation,” Sass said Tuesday. “Are we willing to sell out the public’s right to know about harmful chemicals in the places we work live, and play, just so that Monsanto Co. can sell more glyphosate?”

They will fill the universities with quack professors, the schools with Christian fundamentalists, and either use scientists to quietly serve their wants and needs or round them up and execute them. Us liberals will be arrested and thrown in for-profit prisons.

The main head-level shelf is full of Roundup. Evidently it is popular. For god's sake - no one wants to see a dandelion growing between cracks in their sidewalk. Pour on another gallon! What hun? Three of our neighbors were just diagnosed with cancer? Oh, my, I wonder what caused it?

EU weed-killer evidence 'written by Monsanto' https://euobserver.com/environment/137741
The EU's conclusion that a potentially dangerous weed-killer was safe to sell was partially based on scientific evidence that was written or influenced by Monsanto, the manufacturer of the product, an investigation by EUobserver and Dutch magazine OneWorld has revealed.
Earlier this year, a US court released a cache of hundreds of Monsanto's internal emails that showed the firm's involvement in at least two academic reports on glyphosate, sold under the trade name Roundup.
A Monsanto employee admits in one of the emails that the company wrote a study on glyphosate and later attributed the work to academics.
Another study on glyphosate was “redesigned” with help of company scientists in order to create a more favourable outcome, the internal emails suggest.
EUobserver and OneWorld have discovered that both of the studies were relied on by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) when it evaluated the safety of glyphosate in 2015 as part of the EU licence renewal process.

Largest Study of GM Crops Yield Surprising Results
http://interestingengineering.com/largest-study-of-gm-crops-yields-surprising-results/
While pesticide use by farmers who planted the GM maize seeds dropped by 11.2 percent, herbicide use only dropped 1.3 percent. With soybeans, modified to survive herbicides, farmers reported increasing their herbicide use by a whopping 28 percent. Ciliberto explained why this might be:
“In the beginning, there was a reduction in herbicide use, but over time the use of chemicals increased because farmers were having to add new chemicals as weeds developed a resistance to glyphosate. Evidence suggests that weeds are becoming more resistant and farmers are having to use additional chemicals, and more of them. I did not expect to see such a strong pattern.”

Researchers Find RoundUp Responsible for Toxic Algae Blooms in Great Lakes http://www.realfarmacy.com/roundup-algae/
Ohio — Glyphosate, the main ingredient found in Monsanto’s best-selling herbicide, RoundUp, has poisoned Lake Erie.
Scientists from Ohio Northern University (ONU) in the U.S. have discovered that glyphosate is largely responsible for an increase in harmful algae blooms that contaminate lake water and kill off life dependent upon this habitat.
Namely, dissolved reactive phosphorous (DRP) has been contaminating Lake Erie and the Maumee watershed. This DRP comes from surrounding farms that rely on Monsanto’s weedkiller to grow their crops. The runoff ends up in the lakes, killing fish and contaminating the water.
Though Lake Erie’s trouble with phosphorous is not new, there has been an alarming increase in DRP, which caused scientists to question its probable origins.
Christopher Spiese, a chemist at Ohio Northern University suggests that an increase in the use of glyphosate is causing the problem. DRP loads in Lake Erie have been increasing since the early 1990s — the same time that RoundUp was being sold to farmers across the U.S.

Roundup’s Glyphosate found in tampons http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028072350
Apparently there are a handful of people herabouts who are gung ho about having glyphosate in their wine. They will probably flock to this thread also to praise the fact, or at least to minimize, the fact that the herbicide is also found now in tampons.
But level headed people who have no interest other than good health, will regard this needless pollution of tampons with chemical poisons as a heinous corporate betrayal of their most intimate trust.
"According to a new study by the University of La Plata in Argentina, most tampons (at least 85 per cent), cotton balls and sanitary products contain glyphosate: an ingredient that has been ruled as "probably carcinogenic" by the World Health Organization, notes RT news.
"The result of this research is very serious. When you use cotton or gauze to heal wounds or thinking they are sterilized products, contaminated with a carcinogenic substance," said pediatrician Vazquez Medardo Avila in the Spanish study..."

Nine Out of 10 Americans Tested Positive for Monsanto's Cancer-Linked Weedkiller Glyphosate
A probable human carcinogen is found in far too many foods
What makes that figure even more alarming is that many of you who sent in urine samples for testing probably eat more organic than non-organic food. Which suggests that either your organic food has been contaminated and/or you’re being exposed to glyphosate via unknown sources.
Worse yet? Children had the highest levels.
The testing, carried out by a laboratory at UC San Francisco, was the first-ever comprehensive and validated LC/MS/MS testing project to be carried out across America. According to the results, people who live in the west and mid-west tested higher than those living in other regions of the country.

15 Health Problems Linked to Monsanto’s Roundup
By Alexis Baden-Mayer, Organic Consumers Association
Monsanto invented the herbicide glyphosate and brought it to market under the trade name Roundup in 1974, after DDT was banned. But it wasn’t until the late 1990s that the use of Roundup surged, thanks to Monsanto’s ingenious marketing strategy. The strategy? Genetically engineer seeds to grow food crops that could tolerate high doses of Roundup. With the introduction of these new GE seeds, farmers could now easily control weeds on their corn, soy, cotton, canola, sugar beets and alfalfa crops—crops that thrived while the weeds around them were wiped out by Roundup.
Eager to sell more of its flagship herbicide, Monsanto also encouraged farmers to use Roundup as a dessicant, to dry out all of their crops so they could harvest them faster. So Roundup is now routinely sprayed directly on a host of non-GMO crops, including wheat, barley, oats, canola, flax, peas, lentils, soybeans, dry beans and sugar cane.
Between 1996 – 2011, the widespread use of Roundup Ready GMO crops increased herbicide use in the U.S. by 527 million pounds—even though Monsanto claimed its GMO crops would reduce pesticide and herbicide use.
Monsanto has falsified data on Roundup’s safety, and marketed it to parks departments and consumers as “environmentally friendly” and “biodegradable, to encourage its use it on roadsides, playgrounds, golf courses, schoolyards, lawns and home gardens. A French court ruled those marketing claims amounted to false advertising.

I wonder if they'll resurface here now with Monsanto again in the news, or has their contract run out?
