EU will only make trade deals with nations that ratify Paris climate agreement
The United States would be excluded.

The European Union will no longer make trade deals with the United States if President Trump follows through on withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement, according to a French official whose comments were endorsed by the European Commission.
Addressing the French parliament on Thursday, French foreign affairs minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne drew a line in the sand.
One of our main demands is that any country who signs a trade agreement with EU should implement the Paris Agreement on the ground, said Lemoyne. No Paris Agreement, no trade agreement. The [United States] knows what to expect.
EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmström tweeted support Lemoynes comments on Thursday.
Yes Paris deal reference needed in all EU trade agreement today, she wrote.
A day later, a spokesperson for the European Commission which manages the EUs day-to-day business elaborated on Malmströms stance while voicing support for the comments as well.
Since the deal we concluded last year with Japan, this chapter contains an explicit reference to the ratification and actual implementation of the Paris climate deal, the spokesperson told Climate Home News. This point is a priority for the EU and it would be difficult to imagine concluding an important trade deal without an ambitious chapter on trade and sustainable development attached to it.
That assertion means that any country that fails to ratify the Paris agreement a landmark accord that was signed by virtually every country in the world in an effort to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius this century will be shut out of new trade deals.

(82,849 posts)Boy, who knew that trade with the EU was holding back the great and powerful United States of America? Another problem solved, another triumph for President Donald J. Trump!
So much winning.

The U.S. is the only country to withdraw.
Meanwhile, 174 of 197 signatories have ratified the agreement.

How I wish that we hadn't become such a rogue, dangerous nation.

It lets the world top polluters, China and India to set their own goals, all but ignoring the coal businesses in those countries as well as their business partners elsewhere.
Want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Tell China and India to stop building coal fired plants. But that will never happen.

(16,350 posts)But the basic facts I outlined cannot be disputed.
The truth is climate change is happening, regardless what the US does or doesn't do.
You know China isn't just the biggest polluter of greenhouse gases, they are the largest producer of all types of pollution, like carbon monoxide and sulfites. That's why kids in China are showing respiratory illnesses as young as three years old. The Paris agreement changes nothing.

A new form of fake logic you recently invented, no doubt. As long as it validates your narrative, no doubt you''re cool with it.

(16,350 posts)I'm not presenting a narrative, just basic facts.
The Paris agreement allows countries to select their own emission reduction goals, and the countries I mentioned are taking advantage of that fact. None of the reductions will slow climate change.

(25,895 posts)that the hideous pollution they are suffering under can be eliminated. Hell, London had killer fogs (what they were actually called, and I vaguely remember them being in the news) in the 1950's because of coal emissions. They got their own clean air act and long since got rid of them.

(82,849 posts)The Institute for Energy Research, founded and run by a former Enron executive, is pretty goddam funny place to go for an unbiased look at energy, funded as it has been by ExxonMobil and the American Petroleum Institute (their spokeswomen are just so pretty, while selling death and environmental destruction).

(16,350 posts)I just looked for some links.
It doesn't change the fact that China and India are building hundreds and hundreds of coal fired power plants, all while participating in the Paris agreement.

(59,504 posts)For decades, the reason we could not get an agreement with everyone was that some wanted a one size fits all commitment. The average amount of energy used PER PERSON is less for countris like China and India. They resented that it was not considered that they created less of the proplem.
