I am so glad no one in the WH knows anything about optics.

I watched a couple minutes of Trump's speech today. ( what on earth is going on with his hair???)

So, up there on stage, behind him to his right, or on our left as we view it, are a couple guys chewing something,
The guy with the most chins is especially distracting, he moves around, takes his hat off and on, seems to be shoving something into his mouth from time to time.
a bit later joined by another guy chewing, in the lower part of the pic.
all thru the speech, looks like.

very noticeable and rather distracting, I thought. Not that being distracted from Trump is necessarily a bad thing...

wasting data on this crap. Funny you mention his hair, I noticed it too...but I think I'm really noticing it now that I've seen that plane and I'm really freaking bald picture. I'm seeing now how he constructs is....it's all 'falling into place'.

Kind of like when the guy with the chins shows up to the go cart race with his lawnmower. Difference being the guy wasn’t allowed to race because they have a limited set of standards.

Not all, but many.

They probably chew and are using gum during the speech because they can't spit. I skipped to the end to see if they swallowed the gum. Apparently not. But I did note that trump applauded. Is that usual for a speaker? Seems odd (but fitting for trump).

I'd love to see these guys at the end of the year or next tax time when they really see that that paltry amount they get in their checks each week is what they get for all this talk and that it probably means no big tax refund like they are used to. And surely after then they are going to start to notice the lack of or cuts in services.

This thing with Trump clapping with the audience goes way back. It really gets to be a pain when he claps close to this mic.
there were complaints about that during his SOTU speech..he actually acted like he was out on the campaign trail, milking applause, clapping his ownself, giving that bullfrog grin/smirk he does.

I find it remarkable that he has spent a lifetime surrounded by the moneyed crowd, whether he was renting his money or owning, whatever, makes no difference, and completely managed to avoid the slightest bit of manners or good taste rubbing off on him.
That takes real dedication.

like Skittles. Gum just goes in the one time, not repeatedly.

15. "renting his money"

That is the perfect way to put what trump has done. I watched the Netflix show Dirty Money and it really showed how he did not earn anything. All scams. On paper he may have something, but in reality I don't think he has as much.

As far as "good taste" of the moneyed crowd: several years ago I worked cleaning houses. It was not long before I realized many people have much more money than taste. There are some things you cannot buy. It was a very back breaking experience, but it really opened my eyes. Every day I would come home and appreciate my brick ranch home that was full of kids, pets and books. Real stuff!

I have read about Trump in books by Wayne Barrett and by Tim O'Brien, and forget which one of them reported that Trump would get loans from the banks, when the time came to repay them, he would re-finance instead of paying anything on the loan, and would then get 2-3 more loans from other banks, all on the same buildings as collateral.
The banks gave him the money on the theory he was a wealthy business man and they did not want to lose the original loans.

When he could not extend the loans any further and the banks demanded repayment, he would sue them on varied BS grounds.
Eventually, he would declare bankruptcy, which would result in the banks getting very little back.
Most people do not understand that a business bankruptcy is far different than a Joe Schmo bankruptcy. He always came out ahead.

eventually the various banks stopped giving him money. All but Deutche Bank..a whole different story there.

They know exactly what makes Trump come off as accessible to people who hate politics and they keep doing it. From the disregard for decency (that they call opposition to PC) to the callouness to the sloppiness in his appearance, that they respect him because of it. A rich guy who doesn't have good manners is endearing to some people because they can see themselves in him.
For all Trump doesn't know and isn't willing to learn about doing the job of POTUS, I think he knows what he's doing when it comes to optics. It is essentially the same job he was doing in entertainment media. He got away with selling stage managed productions as reality for a long time before his campaign.
