...Congress (and the OSC) needs to act to make Trump understand that the law and his government office are not playthings for his amusement.
The Rude Pundit @rudepundit 6m6 minutes ago
The president is accusing a member of Congress of committing a crime. If you don't think this is dangerous territory, you're the problem.

(36,482 posts)Same with that shithole in Alabama. That race shouldn't have even been close. And that shithole, Arpaio, shouldn't even be considering a run for the Senate. He should have been shamed into hiding in his house for the rest of his life. The backlash for electing a black man for president has been stunning. It's sad that so much ugliness still exists.
And that ugliness has been growing for some time now, thanks to the right-wing sensationalist media and the ignorance of a large percentage of the populace. I'm afraid it could get worse, before it gets better.
Hermit-The-Prog
(33,364 posts)You nailed it.
The deplorables alone could not have elected so many of these cowards, sociopaths and sycophants. The sensationalist media still promotes the "game", "horse race", and "battle" with snippets and soundbites that fit between commercials and celebrity gossip. With a large part of the population getting all of their news only via tv, it is no wonder so many conclude that "both sides" are the same.
Marketers know that a dissatisfied customer is the most motivated to speak up. Those behind the talk shows, RW radio, etc., know this well. They want to intensify the dissatisfaction of the underinformed and misinformed potential voter and then aim that dissatisfaction at every elected obstacle to their goals.
Can the smartphone generation overwhelm or educate the tv generation?
PatSeg
(47,520 posts)A lot of the "smartphone generation" is getting its news and information from memes, tweets, and short video clips. We live in the information age and sadly ignorance appears epidemic.
A lot of low information voters treat politics like American Idol or reality TV. There was a time when such people weren't interested in politics and didn't vote. They were watching Jerry Springer and Dr. Phil, if not professional wrestling. Now they are hooked on Fox News and feel like they are really informed. After all it is "news".

(290 posts)There really should be rules and standards of discourse that must be adhered to as President. If toleration for this use of twitter at high levels goes on this is what we shall expect to see in the future. It percolates down the chain and lowers everything it touches. This is not intellectual speech; it's designed to rile emotions. I hope the next President does a 180 turn and eschews a personal Twitter account as a result.

They've had great success, of course.
Nowhere more so than by using money to corrupt our colleges and universities into allowing the teaching of ideas that were once not considered valid or even respectable in their disciplines. Almost all our major universities have accepted endowment with their "schools," which have been turning out generations of grads who've then been moved into influential positions in private and government.

Trumpy debases himself and all of the GOP by his idiotic messaging and the GOP's passive enabling. He's really insulting the leadership of his own party by virtually forcing them to support his ranting and his panicky tweets. And he'll continue to insult them for as long as he's in power. And the GOP will bend over and take it.

(347 posts)I really don't want to be too dramatic, however, as many people who are much smarter than I have pointed out WE HAVE NEVER BEEN IN THIS SITUATION BEFORE, except maybe during the run-up to the Civil War.
Trump says Schiff "Must be stopped." I was immediately reminded of "Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?"
Here's the Wikipedia article explaining the source of that comment and its fatal result.
"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" (or turbulent priest) is a cry attributed to Henry II of England, expressing his frustration regarding his conflicts with Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. While this was not a direct order, upon hearing this comment from their sovereign, four knightsReginald FitzUrse, Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy and Richard le Bretontraveled from Normandy to Canterbury and killed Becket.[1]
The phrase attributed to Henry II, most commonly expressed as "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?", comes from oral tradition and there are multiple versions of the exact words he used.[3] A more elaborate version is "What miserable drones and traitors have I nurtured and promoted in my household who let their lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born cleric?"[4] In all versions the basic scenario remains the same: Henry made an outburst against Becket which his courtiers interpreted as an order to kill the priest. Henry later took responsibility for Becket's death but claimed he had never intended it.[4]
. . .
This phrase received fresh attention in September 2017, when it was quoted by Former FBI director James Comey, during his 8 June 2017 testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee. During the testimony, Senator Angus King asked Comey, "When the president of the United States, in the Oval Office, says something like 'I hope,' or 'I suggest,' or 'would you,' do you take that as a directive?" (This was in reply to President Donald Trump's statement, "I hope you can let this go," regarding the investigation of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.) Comey testified that he took it to be an order, although the order was not explicit.[7] Comey replied, "Yes. It rings in my ears as kind of 'Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?'" At which point, King replied, "I was just going to quote that!"[8]
There are by various estimates anywhere from 270 million to 310 million guns in the United States. The National Shooting Sports Foundation estimates there are roughly 5 million to 10 million AR-15 rifles owned in the United States -- the AR-15 is based on the old M-16, but with many refinements. The AR-15 fires a 5.56 mm (.223 caliber) round at approximately 3,300 feet per second muzzle velocity. Standard magazines hold 10, 20, or 30 rounds. An off-the-shelf AR-15 is accurate enough for varmints; with modified barrel, trigger, and scope, in the hands of an experienced shooter, an AR-15 can be a pee bringer out to 150 yards. On the other hand, there are tens of thousands of hunting rifles out there firing .30-30, .30-03, 308, and heavier rounds that are accurate out to hundreds of years. With my Weatherby Mark V .308, Leupold Mark 6 scope, I can put three rounds in a circle the size of a half-dollar at 300 yards.
I say this to point out that there likely are people out there with the firearm and the ability to stop Schiff, who, according to Trump "Must be stopped!"
And, friends, it's gonna get a LOT WORSE, before we start returning to normal -- A LOT WORSE.
