(108,980 posts)In any case, other reports don't indicate she was literally frozen. She was not responsive.

(3,769 posts)Lucky for all of us, she immediately knocked on the front door to be let back in.
I forget what time of year it was but I remember it was a nice day with windows open.

(89,254 posts)and it appears the mother did not "get away" as much as the mother just allowed them to go off by themselves and she didn't care to watch them.

Akron police are investigating how a 2-year-old girl died after her mother found the toddler unresponsive in the cold Friday afternoon on a porch.
Police were called to the Willow Run Apartments in Ellet about 3:30 p.m. Friday after the mother discovered the girl, police said. Temperatures in Akron on Friday ranged between 12 and 19 degrees, according to AccuWeather.
The toddler was taken to Akron Childrens Hospital where she later died.
Police are withholding the girls name until her family can be notified.
The Summit County Medical Examiners Office will conduct an autopsy to determine how the child died.

Don't assume every parent is neglectful or doors weren't locked.
I was living there at the time to.
Her son slipped past 2 adults and 2 other siblings to get out.

(108,980 posts)Suddenly they realized he was missing -- and it turned out he had escaped the house, and was found floating under the pool cover.
Alive! (The very cold water had been protective.) But the mother practically had a heart attack.

The kid was constantly running off.
She was a good parent.

(3,335 posts)it be 1) fenced in; and 2) if you have minor children any door leading into your backyard have an alarm on that door to which, anytime it is opened it beeps continuously and says, "Warning, your back door is opened." It continues beeping and repeating the warning until you either close the door or turn off the alarm at the door. It's against the law to deactivate a warning alarm after the property was inspected and there are children in the home. Obviously, the county inspector doesn't regularly come around to check that yours is operating as initially intended, but if a child drowns in that pool as a result of their gaining access to the gated backyard and the alarm had been deactivated, you can be criminally charged with negligence. These types of alarms are available to anyone probably from a Pool Supply Store. If anyone has a small child who is known to wander outdoors alone, I would advise them that this type of safeguard exists to spare you the pain of your child wandering off unknowingly and/or becoming the victim of foul play.

(25 posts)a neighbor called me at 3am. We had to buy key opening locks for inside our front and back door (which wasn't very safe either). He never did think to go out a window. He didn't bother anyone, just strolled around the yard. He just finally stopped after about a year.

(108,980 posts)I remember the discussion around here when a child slipped under a fence and got into a cage at the zoo. Many people like to think it could never happen to them.
I also had a 4 year old son who slipped out of the house when we were both napping (I had a baby, too.) Nothing bad happened, but it was sure scary thinking about the possibilities.
Welcome to DU, runtel!

(297,375 posts)Back in the '70s in Gainesville, Fla.. our son was 5, taking his nap, and I was outside hanging clothes.
I went upstairs and found him missing and I panicked, called the police.
I got a call that he had gone down to the restaurant about a block away. where we ate sometimes. and wanted to order.
Said we could come pick him up.
That kid! I was so overwhelming Relieved!

(44,973 posts)If she escaped, it doesn't appear she went far. This was in the middle of the day. The neighbor claims she saw children outside alone before. All the info is in the article.

(25,586 posts)I was forever slipping over the top of my crib and getting outside, at night or early in the morning before my mom woke up. Id move stuff to the door to work the locks, which apparently gave me no issue even at a young age. Eventually mom put inside deadbolts up and trapped my ass.
Luckily I had two advantages in my wanderings that this poor little one didnt have; I lived in warm Southern California, and we had a standard (big size) poodle who patiently and dutifully followed me around wherever I went.

(44,973 posts)So if she "escaped" she certainly didn't go far. This was also the middle of the day.
