https://shareblue.com/house-republican-campaign-chief-steve-stivers-admits-gerrymandering-is-no-1-gop-advantage-in-2018/#.WnVsVvHN2Oc.twitterHouse Republicans know they are facing a massive wave of public opposition, with cratering polls and a flurry of powerful incumbents fleeing office.
And yet Ohio Rep. Steve Stivers, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee, still believes the party is capable of holding onto its House majority, for one reason: gerrymandering.
Republicans ran a coordinated effort to rig districts in Congress and state houses after the 2010 elections, packing together Democratic voters in few districts and spreading GOP voters out over several. As a result, Republicans have won far more seats in Congress than the popular vote actually dictated.
In an interview on Politicos Off Message podcast, Stivers admits the public is furious with Donald Trump, and that ordinarily, Trump would be a drag in most competitive districts.
But Stivers couldnt actually name a single battleground district where hed want Trump to campaign. And in any case, Republicans can still retain their majority, and they have gerrymandering to thank for that.
I think it starts with the congressional lines, said Stivers.

(25,111 posts)2. Yeah, but GOPers are even pissed off in the gerrymandering areas as well.
No worries, even Russia and their bots won't help you.

(4,492 posts)3. VA proved that you can overcome some gerrymandered districts
Most congressional districts were drawn in 2011-12. A lot has changed since then.
Look around your neighborhood-- Are there new housing developments being built? What about apartments? (Leased housing typically has much higher turnover than owned-- think 1 year lease vs 30 year mortgage.) Are there any colleges in your area? What about those who have come of age since the last election?
These are all potential voters out there to be registered. This was not considered (aside from colleges) when the districts were drawn.
If you want to overcome gerrymandering, get out there in your community and register new voters.
