Something I don't understand about the DACA debate

is that while everyone--democrats and republicans and the vast majority of American people--want a solution that safeguards the status of the DACA children, it is being posited as something the Democrats are being offered for use as a bargaining chip in discussions about purely partisan subjects. Why is it a given that Democrats are the only ones interested in protecting DACA, when *everyone* is interested in protecting DACA?

There might be others who say they support keeping them here but it's not a priority. They are not going to stop supporting trump or other republicans who want to Gerry rid of them just based on that issue alone.

then even a large group of deplorables want them to stay. Maybe the polls are not that trustworthy anymore. It's how the system favors Republicans. They only care about the game playing.

Yes it's 70-80% support across the polls. That means that a lot of everyone wants it.

The Republicans have become so anti-immigrant that they can't reconcile this or at least fear backlash from th Foxworld believers if they do. This is also why so many of them aren't running for re-election.

They represent their funders.

They ostentatiously pander to what's called their "base" on certain knee-jerk issues important to them because investment in them pays off big. They can be counted on to turn out in large numbers if kept happy, and, very importantly, the rest of the party voters will follow.

HR3440. The bill would have granted permanent legal status to Dreamers.

Lovely Lynn Cheney, R-WY, said it was "despicable" that Democrats "Are holding hostage funding for our troops over the issue of illegal immigration. There is no other way to describe it."
