Americans are a bit clueless as to how dangerous this is. Trump, is trying IMO to install himself as a dictator and to end the US democracy, with him making all the calls.

(OH, GOD I hate to say that -- other people are 70, not ME!)

And I agree. I'm alternately terrified, and optimistic, but .... more and more terrified as the days go on, with this full court press assault on the FBI. I was just reading this thread and the thread on Twitter and -the incredible danger it represent is unbelievable.

I remember Vietnam and Watergate as a little kid, lived through Reagan during HS and college, and of course Bush at the turn of the millennium.

To say that I'd take Bush or Reagan back under any circumstances would once have been ridiculous. Now... sigh.

Not to sell the McCarthy era short as a horrible chapter in American history, but far more people are living under the direct threat of being displaced, deported, imprisoned, cut off, cast out. For people of color, their safety and peaceful existence is in severe jeopardy. Regulations have been abolished, so our water and air are turning into shit. All the wealth is going upstream, and it's not going to be spread around. According to our current "president," the free press is "an enemy of the people."

And we've now got most of the Republican Party lining up behind Trump, thus lending credence and support for this radical right-wing coup and some ungodly fascination with untrustworthy Russia. You can bet these fuckers are coming hot and hard for Medicare and Social Security.

And I don't buy the "it's good to be friendly with Russia" line. Russia is NOT a decent entity -- it's an oligarchy that's been under Putin's rule for 17 years (how un-democratic can it be?). They dispose of their political enemies, and use organized crime to take care of business. Russia screws with elections all over the globe. They are behind Brexit (along with the far-right Mercers, who bankroll Breitbart). It is NOT a country that the U.S. has had a lot in common with, other that destroying the Third Reich.

I do know that white nationalists envision a White Empire stretching from North America, across Northern Europe and into what Alex Jones has called "Christian Russia." I suppose they envision building walls everywhere and battling the desperate and unforgivably brown hordes who will be migrating northward as climate change wipes out crops and water. Why try to fix climate change with science, when you can use it to advantage for the racist, billionaire oligarchs?

Somehow they think history is on their side. They think they are the elite who should always have power. They view modernism as an aberration.

The seismic shift away from democracy and toward totalitarian rule is still difficult to grasp, given the sweeping enormity of scale one must apply in order to comprehend the gravity of the issue.

But there are fairly clear signs and signals that illustrate the current (mis)administration’s desires to completely stamp out independent thought (and thus make minds more malleable).

Crazy Joe was nothing compared to the danger of Trump and what is the present day republican party. I would even say this is worse than the Vietnam War era even though I was drafted during that shit. It's worse because these guys are both criminals and traitors. It's worse because they control the White House, The Senate, The House, The Supreme Court, and most of the states. It's worse because they have destroyed free and fair elections in many areas of the country. It's worse because they have a massive propaganda machine that poisons the brains of nearly half the voting population.

She lived through the Depression, WWII, Korea, the McCarthy era, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Watergate, the Church Committee hearings, Iran-Contra, the Clinton Impeachment, 9-11, and everything else over those years.

She admits, from time to time, that she's rather glad she's not likely to be around too much longer because the scope of the mess and the pain of the cleanup will be awful.

It makes me really sad.

regretfully,
Bright
