Anti-Abortion Democrat Loses Key Support To Progressive Challenger
Marie Newmans campaign against Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) is getting a big boost from EMILYs List.
By Daniel Marans
EMILYs List, the fundraising group that backs pro-abortion rights Democratic women, on Friday endorsed Illinois progressive Marie Newmans campaign against Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.), one of the last anti-abortion Democrats in Congress.
Support from EMILYs List, a fundraising powerhouse closely aligned with Democratic Party leadership, gives Newman a major boost in her effort to unseat Lipinski in the March 20 primary.
Throughout her career, Marie has worked to improve her community and advocate on behalf of children and families. Her record is unimpeachable, Stephanie Schriock, EMILYs List president, said in a statement that also criticized Lipinski.
He has put womens reproductive health care in jeopardy and sought to end protections against discrimination, Schriock said. This is not an acceptable way to govern ― and its certainly not what the people of Illinois 3rd District deserve.
Primary challenges to incumbent Democratic members of Congress are exceedingly rare. Perhaps rarer, however, is a Democratic congressman with a history of voting for abortion restrictions. Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) is likely the only other Democratic member of Congress who flat-out opposes abortion rights...................................

(7,300 posts)Your "This is not the time" concern sounds a lot like the gun nutz after a mass shooting. So, if not now, when? Only if Dems hold a safe majority? When is that going to happen and how large of a majority is needed to replace a man dictating to women concerning reproductive rights?

Without a majority...we can do nothing.

(7,300 posts)We have no majority now and you cannot lose what you do not have. What matter is a party member if they vote against that party as in abortion rights? Also, being risk averse means stagnation or erosion of current position. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
So, I ask once again because you didn't answer the question: If not now, when?

(68,586 posts)Trump goes merrily on his way to destroy this country, then what? No we have everything to lose. Every piece of progressive policy since Roosevelt is endangered. And we need to concentrate all our money and efforts winning elections not primarying sitting Democrats who while you may not love them count as a warm body towards a majority and always vote mostly with the Democrats. We need to try and get the Senate especially as we could shut down judges because if Trump gets many more picks, it won't matter who is elected.

(7,300 posts)I don't agree with you and you don't agree with me and that's fine. I just thank you for the civil debate.

(10,024 posts)Lipinski was my Rep. I got gerrymandered out of his district. I never voted for him. He got in because his daddy quit too late for anyone else to run and he handed it off to his out of state son. I voted for a write in candidate. Republicans do not even try for this seat. I wrote to him a few times...the response back was basically I am a Christian first, and a Democrat second (I am fine voting against my constituents wishes if it conflicts with my rigid personal interpretation of the Bible). He has no business being a legislator.
Lipinski has been ok bringing $$ back to the district. He has the support of Michael Madigan. He has never had to campaign before. This time he actively sought for, and got, endorsements from local mayors (yeah if he wins they want federal $, so what could they really do. Newman was pretty unknown at the time).
He needs to be replaced.

(10,168 posts)and fighting for our rights by supporting the Democratic Party platform which is, and always has been, the support of women's reproductive rights.
Why Lipinski has gotten away with running as a Democrat who does not support the Democratic Party platform is a bit of a study in pandering. Why, I'm not sure. But I say good luck to Newman, and good riddance to Lipinski.
