I know it is a lame brain statement. But we are getting so far from any kind of reality that you wonder. It get more nuts every day. The GOP idea is if you get any kind of help from government you must earn it. Of course, free money from government for rich is ok.

(25,862 posts)pay as you go scheme. Which means that the money you or I pay into it today pays the benefits for those receiving those benefits today. More to the point, it is not something in which our contributions are saved, to be paid out for us in the future. What we pay today goes to the current beneficiaries. When we retire, the workers will pay for us.
Some fifty years ago co-workers would blithely state that Social Security wouldn't be around when they'd retire, and I'd vociferously tell them that they were wrong to even consider that possibility. We'd all be around in the future, and we'd need Social Security.
It makes me more than a bit crazy, after all these years, to be right. To be potting out that we need SS, that we will be collecting it.
Medicare is not the same as Social Security

She was born in 45, so she's been getting Social Security for years now. This same old shit meme has been going around for years.

(25,862 posts)Almost 50 years ago now, in the early 1970's, co workers would blithely declare, "Social Security won't be around when we retire." and I'd vociferously say, "No you're wrong. And if you buy into that bullshit you'll be enabling those who want to take away Social Security."
And all these years I've been proven right. DO NOT buy into the crap that SS won't be there when you retire. Fight strongly for your retirement.
I shouldn't have to repeat this.
