"On Friday, Mitt Romney will attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London, a moment his campaign hopes will rekindle the warm and fuzzy feelings surrounding his leadership of the Salt Lake City Games a decade ago.
President Obamas allies are hoping for something else altogether.
Priorities USA Action, the super PAC run by Mr. Obamas former aides, will begin airing a sarcastic ad on Wednesday using the image of Mr. Romney at the 2002 Olympics to underscore attacks about outsourcing and offshore bank accounts.
The ad which will run in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia shows Mr. Romney waving to the athletes from China, India, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Burma and Switzerland as an Olympic-sounding announcer lists the Democratic attacks.
We know the Swiss have a special place in Mitt Romneys wallet, er, heart, the announcer says as the Swiss athletes march into the games with Mr. Romney waving. He kept millions in Swiss banks. Those Swiss sure know how to keep a secret.

"On Wednesday mornings Morning Joe, panelist and former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell took a shot at Bill Burtons pro-Obama SuperPAC Priorities USA Action over a new ad that uses the Olympics to take aim at Republican candidate Mitt Romney. While Rendell said he thought the ad was very funny, when asked a good funny or bad funny, he said an irrelevant funny. I dont think anybody pays any attention whats on Priorities USAs website.
<snip>
"Host Joe Scarborough played the clip twice, feigning ignorance of its origin, and opining that it looks like a late night clip.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski chimed in that the ad was terrible, and co-host Willie Geist was properly offended on Mitt Romneys behalf. I understand the outsourcing message, Geist said, but was it a negative that he took over the 2002 Salt Lake City games that were a disaster, and sort of rescued them and made them a source of pride for the country? I dont know that I would put a negative message against that backdrop.
Given Romneys newfound contempt for free stuff, Geists objection went in the wrong direction; perhaps Priorities would have been better served to include Romneys record-breaking procurement of federal funds to assist in that rescue. While President Obama would probably agree that Romneys drive and ambition were admirable, he didnt do it on his own. The taxpayers helped out an awful lot."

Go over to YouTube and listen to Alexander O'Neal, 1987 "Fake." Romney up and down. (Headset advisable)

(20,450 posts)explain how Robme "saved" the Olympics with $1 billion in taxpayer (read: government) funds but now excoriates government for being ineffective. And only private enterprise can save the economy.

(17,651 posts)silliness works. One liner bumpersticker lines work. The kindergarten mentality of politics works - the GOP, Fox News and other sleaze bag types use it and it works on certain segments of the population.
If we're to crack some heads, let's toss in some of the really silly, simple stuff that's so easily understood by the bumpersticker crowd.
Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)This ad doesn't make the point.
The point is that Mitt Romney used taxpayer funds to bailout the failing Olympics. The Olympics, often riddled with graft and corruption, was on the verge of bankruptcy. Romney begged Congress for $1 billion in taxpayer bailouts. Note that he now condemns government-funded bailouts for the car industry, but supports them when it comes to his own enterprises and Wall Street. He also profitted handsomely from the revenue generated by the the Olympics.
That story ought to be told. The president did it effectively with the "Outsourcing" ad using Romney's singing voice. That ad was both funny AND effective.
This ad is lame in my view because it doesn't really hit the mark.
It's also in bad tastes for ridiculing the Swiss. They don't deserved to be tainted with Mitt Robme's stink!

Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)That's why Robme won't run on that record. He can't run on ANY aspect of his record, and that's why all is has is hatred for Obama.

(108 posts)They need to do an ad with some of this GOLDEN footage of Romney bragging about how much he squeezed out of the federal government to fund the Olympics. I wish everyone would see this!

(25,453 posts)I understand the focus on Bain, Swiss Bank Accounts, and outsourcing. You want to brand Romney as rich, out of touch, and bad for working people. And while they've successfully done that, it only goes so far.
To sew up the election, they need to fundamentally undermine anti-government message. And there's no better way to do that than to use the words and actions of Mitt Romney himself, before he became the nominee for a party that's now controlled by Gover Norquist.
$1 billion in taxpayer dollars for the Olympics. Signed the inspiration for Obamacare into law in Massachusetts years before Obama was President. These are the things we need to hear more about.

(62,444 posts)They are likely to get a sternly worded letter from the IOC on the use of Olympic symbols in advertising. The use of Olympic symbols is protected under a US federal law entirely apart from trademark law.
That aside, the ad seems to mock the Olympics, which despite the orgy of commercialism it has become, a lot of people like.
It reminds people of his management of the Olympics which, arguably, counts as diplomatic/foreign experience of some kind.
It disses a bunch of countries with whom we are friendly. "Those Swiss really know how to keep a secret." We don't have a beef with the Swiss, we have an issue with Romney keeping his money there. We also have a lot of Americans of Indian and Chinese heritage, and the spot uses the image of those countries athletes, of whom they are proud, again to make a mockery of them.
The point is well taken, but the execution can be seen as insensitive and off-putting.

(62,444 posts)And simply because I think this ad has problems does not make me "scum" either.
Those athletes didn't ask to be used in a political ad.
How would you like that?
I'm not particularly fond of the Olympics. A lot of people are, and this ad says "FU" to several teams.
Are the Swiss the new "French"? Are we supposed to not like the Swiss now? The ad insults several countries.

(111,110 posts)it starts out like a pro-Romney ad, which is surely to capture the attention of any Romney supporters because that is human nature to watch something with which we agree.
Then it draws the attention to Romney's special deals "going for the gold".
A very effective ad, in my opinion.

(22,785 posts)Brilliant ad on many dimensions:
1.) It goes to one of the last of Romney's touted "strengths": The Olympics
2.) Perfect timing just as Romney travels to the UK to oportunize the Olympics & his past role.
3.) It ties directly into Romney's secretive international investments and off-shoring American jobs.
Romney's past at the Olympics, as Karl Rove would have said, is "fair game".
Romney did not accidentally wind up in the UK as the Olympics open. Pulleaze. Give me a break! He went there to with the intention to exploit the Olympics. But now the Democrats have pulled that carpet out from under him.
Excellent Ad.
Excellent Timing.
Brilliant. Keep playing it.
