This entire line of reasoning is based on the question of whether Cater Page should have been under surveillance.

Never mind that the surveillance turned out to show that Cater Page is a Treason Weasel.

So it boils down to this. "Yes, your honor, there was a dead body in the trunk but that police office should not have pulled me over."
