A licensed concealed handgun owner from Waco, Texas hurt more than his pride on Monday when his weapon accidentally discharged while he was reaching for his wallet at a Dallas Walmart store.
Police said that Todd Canady, 23, was in the checkout line when he fired the pistol he was carrying inside his pants.
The bullet struck Canady in the buttock, then ricochet on the floor and broke into pieces, KDFW reported. Two children and a woman were also wounded when they were struck by bullet fragments.
Other reports indicated that the bullet grazed Canadys leg he when dropped the Springfield .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol. Shards of concrete from the floor were said to have caused the wounds to the woman and children.

(4,291 posts)Serious question, I have never seen somebody post 40+ posts a day every day on DU like you have. I must conclude you are retired and like to spend time here.
retired in 2002. I love spending time here. I know I get contentious at times but the 2A is a big deal for me, I'm not a single issue voter and I would never even think about voting for a repube, besides, Pres. Obama is much more 2A friendly than Rmoney will ever be.
I disagree with alot of folks here on the 2A but on just about everything else, I'm on board.
I grew up around firearms and have a deep respect for them and they are a lot of fun to shoot.
I'm really trying to tone it down some but I will not back down when I get called a gun nut, gun lover, apologist for the NRA etc, etc.

And I hope you never are compelled to use it.
But don't be pissed off if I chuckle a bit when you shoot yourself in the ass.
permatex
(1,299 posts)but the chances are very small, I've handled firearms all my life.
I don't go to church but even if I did, I probably wouldn't carry it there, being a place of God and all.
I sincerely hope I never have to use it either.
Thank you for defending my right to carry according to the laws of NV.
I don't plan to carry all the time, just when I go into the big city or out to the Lake or Colorado River.

Tell us how you feel about native Americans, and their rights. Tell us how we can save our homes. Tell us how to avoid the Fascism that is about to overwhelm us.
Tell us what you want us to hear!!
On edit: who cares.
permatex
(1,299 posts)I support the ACA although I was hoping for single payer, I want the wars to end, reduce the defense budget and use the savings to rebuild the infrastructure and social programs, I believe woman deserve the same pay as a man for the same job, I support gay marriage/gay rights, I haven't really gotten into the Native American issues, I support using some of the savings on defense to help homeowners who are in foreclosure through no fault of their own, We need to rebuild our inner citys, end the war on drugs and legalize them, quit being the world's policeman, we can't afford it.
A constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
Just because I support the 2A doesn't mean what you think it means
I support all rights, I don't pick and choose.
DocMac
(1,628 posts)We have been through this gun matter before. You're smart enough to know how delicate this is. Don't just take one side without considering the other.
I don't want your hand guns, but i'll take those AR-15's in a second.
A .308 is all you need, my friend. You know this is true.
permatex
(1,299 posts)and I have been toning it down, I do enjoy shooting my AR-15, I also own a MAK-90 which is a semi auto clone of the AK-47. I do keep all of my firearms in 2 heavy duty safes that is bolted to my garage floor with an alarm system on the safes themselves and the garage has a separate alarm w/battery backup. I have appox $60.000 worth of firearms I collected over appox 30 years. They are a good investment monetarily and I take safe storage to another level.
I do support safe storage laws, mandatory liability insurance for gun owners, I have that as a rider to my home policy. I also think that every state should have what IL has, a FOID card, in IL, if you don't have one you can't even touch a firearm,
I think that all firearms transactions should have a background check, right now, it is illegal for a private seller to access the NICS do to background checks, so I believe that the NICS should be opened up to private sellers with a small fee charged to the buyer and a sale/no sale system.
I'm not one of these no restrictions extremists, I so support some gun control laws.
DocMac
(1,628 posts)And I can say that your response was a very good one. Actually, i'm near shock.
I do hope that you help people...knowing what you know and the skills you have. And the tools you have.
That must be a burden.
but when I get called names like gun nut, gun lover, gun hoarder, apologist for the NRA, all gun owners have blood on their hands, gun religionists, etc, etc. it gets hard to stay civil and I lost my cool a few time, but I'm toning it down. Here's a pm I got from someone who didn't appreciate me saying that I was going to fight for my 2A rights, somehow he took it as a threat of violence.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/117252888#post22
Needless to say, I alerted to the admins on that one.
Look, I know that there are extremists on both ends of the gun debate, I don't deny that, hell, I was one. But I'm also a critical thinker, at least I try to be.

(18,186 posts)so saying "it's none of your business" seems rather sociopathic - as in lacking the empathy to think of others besides oneself - in this context.
The children who were harmed were involved pretty intimately in this dumbass's "business."
Oh, right, just collateral damage. As long as HIS rights are kept paramount, who cares who the fuck gets shot just going to the store to pick up milk and bread? How stupid to care about those injured by this idiot! Why, he shouldn't even have to pay their medical bills, either. Make the store do that, because he needs the $$$$ to get a bigger clip!
But selfishness is the American way these days, so carry on! ( Pun intended )

(18,186 posts)Hmmmm....well, in this case, what these shopper didn't know about DID hurt them.
Because their lives were put in danger by this "rugged individualist" mindset.
You can't have it both ways.
If you carry, it is EVERYONE's business in the vicinity where you are. But you know that, or you are being purposefully obtuse.
"Not indicative" of most CCP holders is not the point. Unless you are some superhero, your CC weapon is not immune to failure or theft. Anyone around you can be injured or killed by your weapon. It's not a squirt gun but a killing machine. Not your personal toy but a potentially lethal device.
It may be a risk our society is willing to take to make you feel all warm and safe buying your cream of wheat and prune juice at Wally World, but it IS A RISK we must all be aware of.
It is everyone's business when you carry. Tough shit if you don't like that reality.

(18,186 posts)Saying "it's nobody's business" is the definition of a sociopath. Do you not see that?
We are not all "rugged individualists" living in goddamned caves or tents in the desert. We live in communities, and in order for those communities to be healthy, safe, prosperous places, we must be concerned with the rights and safety of all people - not merely ourselves.
Is it "nobody's business" if I know I am carrying a very contageous disease - like a horrific flu - into a public space? It's certainly my right to go into The Piggly Wiggly with a raging influenza and a high fever and the ability to infect everyone shopping near me. There's not really any law against it.
But it would take a pretty selfish, sociopathic fucker to do so. Or a dumbass.
Same with guns. You can't have it both ways - enjoy the benefits of society but give not a crap about anyone's rights but your own. The minute you bring that weapon into a public space where others may be harmed, that gun becomes the business of every person there.
No way around that.
You haven't answered me above, so I can only assume that you are doing a little soul searching and you've realized that only a really selfish jerk would say "It's nobody's business" in this situation.

I wrecked on my road bike a few years back right in the middle of the road when one of my kids stopped suddenly in front of me. There was a car coming so I jumped up quick, my 9c had come out of its holster and drifted up my shirt and I grabbed at it to catch it when I stood up. Only after catching it did I realize what I'd done. Let the fucker fall it'll be ok is what I learned. I also tightened up the retention and have since changed the way I carry when I ride my bike. Nothing worse than going down on a chunk of steel on your hip at least it sounds painful.
