As Director, Robert Mueller began the practice of sending every new agent class @FBI to the Holocaust Museum to understand what happens when police become complicit in authoritarian regimes.

Jesus, that's one serious overachiever. No wonder she sounds authoritative on Twitter.

(14,574 posts)party affiliation a distant second. I'm getting the idea the Mueller is definitely old school.
He's the kind of guy you might not agree with, but you know he'd die for your right to have, and express, your opinion.
I suspect a lot of the so-called 'deep state' is like that. This is why the Corporate Propaganda Noise Machine (Fox, hate-talk radio, etc.) are so down on them. They know deep down if the shit they are saying is actually exposed to the light of truth it will wilt.
To me, that is cause for optimism - the slow corporate coup we're experiencing now perhaps happened too soon, or maybe to be more precise, the deep pockets funding the radical right Ayn Randian Tea Party types in Congress and the WH are finding that our institutions are a bit more resistant to an oligarchic takeover than they thought.
We see Mueller, but there are hundreds of thousands of federal, state and local government people who put the needs of the people first, and view their work as a sacred trust.

(562 posts)First, lawyers are trained to focus on facts and the law and advocate for either side.
You fail law school if you can't separate out personal beliefs, because your work priduct is as poor as a scientist who allows personal beliefs influence their scientific conclusions.
Mueller knows his investigation and legal recommendations are going to be closely scrutinized. Any sign of bias is quickly picked up. He's never shown that in the past as far as I know.
If he tries to conceal potentially damaging info., he has lawyers from both parties on the case, and lots of FBI. Someone would leak it or call him on it. But nothing in his record suggests that.
So I don't rely as much on his personal integrity as I do his professional role.

(11,949 posts)But to investigate and if appropriate bring charges.
And one charge he will definitely not bring is treason.
Everyone on DU has a whole laundry list of crimes trump is supposedly guilty of and I tend to agree. But while circumstances sure point to crimes, very little actually evidence has been shown. It may actually not exist.
I suspect that no matter what charges he brings, it will not be enough to satisfy many in our community.

(128,979 posts)Obama actually got Congress to EXTEND Mueller's term for 2 years after his 10-year term was up (FBI Director term is 10 years after the Hoover era fiasco of almost 40 years, where Hoover had threatened every President and person in power, since the '30s). Remember, Mueller became FBI Director under Shrub right after 9/11 and Obama KEPT HIM IN through almost his entire 1st term until the term expired, when he had to request an extension).
After the extended 2 years were up, Mueller could no longer serve and that's when Comey came in.
By Charlie Savage July 27, 2011 5:57 pm July 27, 2011 5:57 pm
The Senate on Wednesday voted unanimously to extend the tenure of Robert S. Mueller III as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, allowing him to serve for two more years.
Mr. Mueller, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, had been set to step down on Tuesday because of a 10-year term limit imposed during the post-Watergate era. But President Obama asked Congress to allow Mr. Mueller to stay on at the bureau, arguing that his national security team needed continuity because the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency were getting new leaders.
While Mr. Mueller is widely respected by the Democratic and Republican Parties, some lawmakers expressed reluctance about making an exception to the 10-year term limit. Congress imposed that restriction in 1976 to help ensure some political independence for the bureau and to prevent future directors from amassing the level of power wielded by its longtime director J. Edgar Hoover, who had died several years earlier.
A disagreement also arose about the constitutionality of simply extending Mr. Muellers term. Eventually, the White House and Republicans agreed to a two-step process: Congress passed legislation creating a special two-year term lasting until Sept. 4, 2013, and making a one-time exception to the 10-year limit for any person to be director. Mr. Obama then nominated Mr. Mueller for the new term.
Before the confirmation vote, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, said the complex process had established a historical record showing that any future exceptions to the term limit should not be undertaken lightly.

(128,979 posts)because of the law that required a term limit for the FBI Director. That is why Congress had to pass legislation to allow Mueller to serve 2 more years, and then be re-nominated and reconfirmed. Much of the argument revolved around keeping the intelligence community "stable" during the on-going wars (and potential terror threats).
As a sidenote - Bin Laden had been killed just a few months earlier in May 2011 (and Mueller was reconfirmed in July 2011 for 2 more years).
So Mueller did end up serving through Obama's entire first term.

I've actually only tried it once. One of those times when you are depressed and want to eat something decadent and greasy and bad for you. Something that you can look at and say, "At least I don't feel as bad as that looks".
Where to start. For starters, the gravy, which is invariably fake news gravy, poured over what were crispy french fries now a soggy mess. Then add unripened cheese curds. You know, cheese before it even tastes like cheese....or anything at all. And you can't use your fingers anymore, which for me is part of the ritual of eating FF...picking one or two up and dipping them into ketchup. No you must use a fork for sure, to scoop up mouthfuls of wet 'gravy' soaked potato pieces littered with spongy white lumps of tasteless bits.
Damn you yanks. We love hamburgers, fries (with ketchup), and apple pie too! But sure, take them as your own. We'll hang onto peanut butter, and instant mashed potatoes as our food legacy, fine.

(1,660 posts)I was in Europe with my parents for a year in 1967-68. I was 17 years old. We visited Normandy and the Berghof in Berchtesgaden, but we never visited a camp. I still wonder about that omission.
Of course my parents had no Jewish heritage, and it's a bit of a dark topic for three kids aged 13-17. My current mother-in-law survived a year in Auschwitz and Birkenau, so it's far more important to me now.
Never Again.

(45,806 posts)You know, even if the conman heard all of the good things Muller has done all of his life, I can just hear him say, Yea, so? Conman doesn't recognize good traits in people. All he recognizes is if someone is wealthy AND LIKES HIM, they're great people. If they're not wealthy, or especially DON'T LIKE HIM, they're no good.
I watched a clip online today of an SNL skit where Will Farrell, portraying GWB said "My ratings are really high now, thanks to Mr. Trump. People actually are missing me!" He's RIGHT!
