(14,531 posts)AF 1 is about to be replaced. We get to pay 24 million just before the plane is decommissioned. trump is so thrifty.

(14,275 posts)If so, wouldn't repairing the refrigerators have been a little more practical?

(52,227 posts)Note that it can also be refueled midair.
I get all that.
But that doesnt mean we have to pay for an unlikely scenario and to make sure they eat *well*.
They can eat mres, canned food, etc.

(3,148 posts)Donny announced canceling the Boeing contract around December of '16. It's why Obama's administration probably ordered new planes and why Donny's an idiot. By the time they upgrade the older planes, they'll probably eclipse the 4 billion cost for the new planes.

(52,227 posts)Its an unlikely contingency scenario. We dont need to spend millions so a few people can eat especially well.

(43,890 posts)Due to the fact that Air Force One is a one-of-a-kind aircraft, many of its components require unique testing by the Federal Aviation Administration and the cost of the testing is included in the price of the component, in this case refrigerators. The $24 million contract will cover the costs of engineering support services for the new chillers -- including prototype design, manufacturing and installation, according to the DOD contract.
"The units and associated aircraft structural modifications are being specially designed to provide nearly 70 cubic feet of temperature-controlled (refrigeration/freezer) storage to support on-board personnel for an extended period of time, without having to restock while abroad," Stefanek told CNN.
"The engineering required to design, manufacture, conduct environmental testing and obtain Federal Aviation Administration certification are included in the cost," she said.

It carries provisions for all personnel and passengers for about three weeks. With midair refueling, it can remain airborne that entire time. Everything on board has to be hardened for radiation and EMP blasts. AF1 only looks like a 747. It is far different.

Then after 2 years of modification and testing they become AF1.

What would you like for dinner, Mr. President, the beef teriyaki or the meatloaf with gravy?

(4,139 posts)You can't just go to Home Fricking Depot and buy four fridges for AF1, which will serve other Presidents after fatboy Trump. Anything going on an aircraft has to be designed and tested to survive in that environment (+2.8 g / -1g), meet durability requirements, not be a fire hazard, be hardened against EMP, etc. And they're only building 4. A refrigerator for your home will cost millions too if it's only one of four built because design and engineering will comprise most of the cost.

(24,368 posts)These two aircraft were delivered to the 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews in 1990, and the chillers are therefore almost 28 years old.
It should be noted that the 89th is a completely professional and completely a-political unit of the United States Air Force and this is most likely a procurement item that has been in the works for quite some time. Suggesting for one second that the purchasing of this very basic and frankly vital equipment is in any way BECAUSE of Trump is absurd.
Hassin Bin Sober
(26,328 posts)But I hear you.
I doubt very much trump had anything to do with the refrigerators.
But President Obama was correct in saying they would have impeached him over this.
So fuck the repigs. It's their time "in the barrel" as they like to say.

(35,454 posts)A senior adviser to former President Obama on Friday mocked reports that replacing the Air Force One refrigerators will cost $24 million, saying Obama "would have been impeached" over it.
We would have been impeached, Eric Schultz, a former White House deputy press secretary, said.

(42,862 posts)... Obama is MUCH SMARTER than people give him credit for. He's definitely NOT as "stupid" or myopic and shortsighted as some would try to make him out to be.
Eliot Rosewater
(31,112 posts)I would like more details about that actually.
Since the cost is absurd and ridiculous, I would suspect he would have been very involved or at least did not kill the idea when he heard it the way Obama likely would have or at least demanded a cheaper way.

(26,328 posts)I agree with the posters upthread who say these things are usually in the works for years in advance and that the Airlift Command is pretty apolitical.
I remember the brouhaha ove the $11billion helicopter deal that was started years before Obama even took office but the repigs used it to bash Obama as if he was the person who placed the order. He cancelled it.
So yeah, I doubt Mango Mussolini had anything to do with it. But I'm not married to that idea.
And I'm all for using it to bash Trump over the head with this issue whether he is involved or not. Like I said, "it's his turn in the barrel." Though that jagoff will probably double the order and his trumpanzee fans will howl with glee and shake their cages "durrrrr like a boss!!!!"

(67,782 posts)....to both Boeing and Airbus and virtually every airline in the world.
What you're saying might be true if there was never a refrigerator manufactured and installed on an aircraft. They've been on aircraft for decades, including 747s. Don't forget, the original 747s had a lounge on the upper level complete with full bar and refrigerators.
These are merely UPgrades of the existing units (and only two of the five) $23 million for upgrades is ludicrous.
VMA131Marine
(4,139 posts)Especially when we're talking AF1 or one of the Presidential helicopters is going to lead you to wrong conclusions. I currently work in the aerospace industry on the military side, I have a friend who works on the rotor blades for the HMX-1 Sea Kings that serve as Marine One. Every person who touches a component going on a Presidential aircraft has to be cleared to do so. Every component has to be handled in isolation from components not destined for a presidential aircraft and tracked from manufacture to installation. You're not so much paying $24 M for 4 fridges as the assurance that they meet specs and haven't been tampered with along the way.
George II
(67,782 posts)...subcontractor) all the infrastructure, employees, and inspection procedures are already in place. We're talking about refrigerators inside the cabin, not rotor blades that will lift an aircraft.
VMA131Marine
(4,139 posts)The FAA doesn't get involved in certification of military aircraft. And again, everyone associated with parts associated with the Presidential aircraft has to be cleared to work on them.

(12,586 posts)When I was in the Air Force, we used to keep the frozen king crab legs we picked up in Alaska in the wheel wells of our C141s. The temperature at altitude was -50 degrees, which worked real well. It was a great idea until we had to spend an hour in a low altitude holding pattern in South Carolina during the summer.

(56,828 posts)Don Jr and Eric went to Wal-Mart and bought 2 "Great Value" brand refrigerators for $1,000 apiece. They then took off the Great Value label and put Trump Refrigeration on them and sold them to the government for $12 million each.

(29,715 posts)But I was thinking about the engineering that must go into something like that. It has to be light enough, can't pull too much power, must accomodate precise temperature on the ground and in the air while being large enough to hold 3000 full meals. Quite a feat.
But 24million would pay for a lot of other things. Too bad they gave all our money away already.
